OH! Well, I imagine the cats heat up to that temp relatively quickly..

Andrew, I'm speaking cat temps, not water or oil.

Wow! I guess it makes sense with a car of that vintage (early 1980's) to be set up to warm up the cats. 3,000 rpm...that's like cruse control if it were in gear :-) How long does it take the temp to get to 140-150? (I assume your speaking water temp & not oil?)

The rumor I heard is that North American 308's both carb and FI were set up with very high cold idle settings to heat the cats up quickly so they worked more efficiently from cold start. Of course, all the carb cars quickly had the cold setting reset to 1500 to 1700...seems not so easy on the FI cars. Previous posts had owners putting a restriction in the hose to the aux air valve to bring the cold idle more into line.

No, it works up to 3,000 (slowly) before dropping back. It's my understanding that 2,500 to 3,000 is correct.

Stephen- did you mean your idle works up to 1,300? 3,000 seems a little high- even for a cold idle...

Thanks guys. I'll try the aux valve first. It has never revved up when cold, just thought it was odd!

Mark:
You might also check the the position of the throttle plate a air by-pass screw. I cleaned the by-pass screw with carb cleaner - it was dirty. I have been told the position of the throttle plate is important. WSM states that the throttle plate should be adjusted to give a vacuum reading (engine warm and fans running) of 2.5 and 2.0 mm Hg. Then adjust the idle speed with the by-pass screw. Cleaning the Aux. Air Valve and the correct adjustment at the throttle fixed my car.

Stephen,
Good advice, costs you little extra (other than time) to try cleaning and reinstalling...if it still don't work, ditch it and get a new one.

I had problms with the Aux Air Valve on my - drive me crazy. Removed it from the vehicle, cleaned it with carb cleaner and sprayed it with WD-40 (WD-50 in my case). That fixed it. Good luck.

Stehpen has that right....you may have a failed auxilary air valve. You can remove it, put it in the freezer for 15 minutes and see if it opens all the way....then bring it out, and warm it, and see if it closes completely. If it isn't operating correctly, replace it, they are not terribly expensive....$125 for normal cars...so figure $200 for a Ferrari. :-)

If I am not mistaken, idle is to be 1,000 +/- 100.
My 82 GTSi cold starts at 1,000 and then works up to approximately 3,000 just before dropping back to 1,000 at 140 to 150 degress.

I've been looking into the fuel injection system of my 308GTBi, and want a few ideas as to what speed it should idle at. I've read that it should 'fast idle' when cold, but when cold it idles at 1200rpm and doesn't change, even when hot. Should it be higher when cold or is this normal?
