Tillman -- Are those measurements 1) at the tailpipe, 2) without cats, 3) running warm with 4) no air injection occurring (or describe test conditions please)? Under the previous measurement conditions, I believe the nominal adjustment targets for an open-loop K-Jet system is ~0.8% CO and HC a couple~few hundred PPM max. Those CO/HC numbers aren't horrible (but it's odd that the CO% numbers don't correspond better to the A/F ratio numbers), but if your test limit is 1% CO max then I'd factor in a set of working cats into the price if not present to minimize future hassle (although, as a US buyer, I'd always insist on some concession from the seller for a cat-less post-'78 F even if I didn't want them and could run without them -- JMO). When you say: "...whether or not the emissions are OK...." do you mean you're only concerned with exhaust gas measurements at the tailpipe or if the car actually has the "correct" US mods present (whatever those might be )? |

One other thought: Since there are two separate Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection systems on the car, the left side may be adjusted differently than the right side. |

Tillman This may not help much with your questions or about emissions limits in TX, but here are the actual and (maximum limit in CT) from the last emissions test on my 1983 400i: HC: 47.0 actual (limit in CT is 157.0) CO: 0.49 actual (limit is 1.00) NO 287.7 actual (limit is 1121.0) One factor in the performance of the 400i you are looking at could be the cats, with maybe the left side being impaired for some reason. There were no cats on my car when I bought it 5 years ago, so I had Dik ("c" omitted so the name will pass the FChat censor) Fritz at Amerispec install new cats and also make up "test pipes". He said that new cats (versus old) would make a big improvement in emissions performance.

Look in the owners manual under the section that shows where the ID plates are. It should point to the emmisions plate info. somewhere under the hood and this plate will tell you what the #'s should be. |

Greetings. A friend of mine is looking at an early 80s injected 400. So far everything looks OK, but we're trying to figure out whether or not the emissions are OK. Here's the numbers: Left side at idle HC(ppm) 321 CO% 2.69 O2% 1.86 CO2% 11.9 A/F Ratio 14.5 Right side at idle HC(ppm) 181 CO% 0.43 O2% 3.24 CO2% 12.5 A/F Ratio 16.8 The reports shows "close to the same at 2000 RPM" What does this show about the engine? Why might the left side and right be so different at the HC and CO%. Most importantly, does anyone know if it will pass Texas emissions in the Metroplex? Gracias |
