Hey -

Thanks for everyone's help. I have bought the spider exhaust from Jim. Once I get it, I will try converting my 2 can exhaust into a challenge style exhaust.

For the money, a 94 spider exhaust with test pipes would be nice....I would try bidding on the one on Ebay or buy the one offered below...

absolutely, bb.
I know that FX is planning another track day in nov. I will check with them when that is exactly. That'll give us both an opportunity to run our cars side-by-side again. Hey, maybe with a tire changing machine, I can change my tires over to some racing cmpd ones so that I don't get squirrely on you again! :-)

I'll let you know about the dates for the track day...

On a more related note, John, the next time BB and I see each other, I'll be sure to take some digi pix of his challenge exhaust compared to mine. Then he can walk you through how he put it all together!

Absolutely B...when are we going to the track again? I got pissed off at the tire monkeys for damaging my Ferrari wheel so I bought a tire changing machine! I'll be track ready in a few weeks when my machine comes. JR I'd take a picture but I have no digital camera. Nex time I see B with his digital we will take back to back pics and post here on FC.

John,
Do you remember the email I sent you? The exhaust that billybob made the jig from was from my challenge exhaust... it was relatively easy for him to do...did not take long at all, but you must have some welding skills! :-) I haven't heard it yet, but it would be interesting to see performance and hear sound differences between the two!

Good luck!!

Thanks Billy -

If you don't mind, I may be bugging you with specifics when I get the 'new' exhaust and start playing with this. If you have any pics of what you did, I'd love to see them. Even if it just a picture of the finished product.

Thanks - John

Good call Joh roberts. That is what i would do. I would have bought a real race challenge exhaust if could have found one. In hidsight I am glad I did not do it. The race ch exh is so simple you would be mad upon receipt after you paid 2 grand! You can butcher your 1 can and when you weld up the phony challenge you can turn the inlet retaining ring outward and it says Ferrari on it. If you get pulled over do what my friend does play stupid. There are so few of these cars around you just shine the flashlight in there and point out the word Ferrari on it and tell the cop it came that way. So far that has worked for him on several occasions. Remember you cannot convert the 1 can to challenge but you can convert the 2 can to challenge

Hey everyone -

Thanks for all the help. I am going to take Jim up on his offer for the spider exhaust. Then I'll play butcher with mine and see how it turns out. It should be a fun little project.

-John

Jim - I sent you an email.

My car with a Tubi compitition only system sets off car alarms, and kills small animals within a two block radius...
How loud do you want to get?

JR,

The newer 348's have the single can/chamber exhaust (aka. the 348 spider exhaust). The single-can exhaust, along with the factory-revised ECU chip, is worth additional 12 HP.

You can upgrade to single chamber exhaust but you may need additional brackets.

I dont know if it'll improve the sound, but for $200, it's worth a try.

I am confusing myself. The one Jim is selling is a 1-can, my car has the 2-can exhaust. So, his is off a newer 348. Is it a louder exhaust than mine, or just lighter?

Sorry for all the questions.

Jim -

What year 348 did your exhaust come off? Would it be able to be modified like billy was saying?

$200 is an awesome deal. Heck I would buy it and jet coat the inside if JR is not interested.

John,
Check this link out.
http://www.ferrariads.com/cgi-bin/classifieds/classifieds.cgi?search_and_display_db_button=on&db_id=369&query=retrieval

I posted a used 348 muffler for sale a while back. I have a Tubi system, which is great, but this muffler is about 70% as loud ( I was told by FOD that it was off a Spider - long story). I'm asking $400 + shipping. However, I'll unload it for $200 to get it out of my garage. Let me know.
Thanks,
Jim Hilton

John: I suspect that if you spring for the Challenge exhaust and find it too loud, you could probably re-sell it without too much hassle. If you drive the car mostly on the street you will likely have trouble with the local constabulary, unless you're on very good terms! How strict are they about enforcing that sort of thing in AZ?

My local dealer just called, Ferrari (Italy) has the 348 challenge exhaust with bracket available (new). They run about $2k for all the bits.

As far as the noise level, I had this dilema when I upgraded my Porsche exhaust. I ended up with the Fabspeed Maxflos, because everyone said the supercups were too loud. In hindsight, I wish I had gone for the louder option. So, now that I want to upgrade the 348, I am afraid I will make the same mistake. Unfortunately, it is not easy to try out the exhaust options before you buy. I heard a 348 with a Tubi, and it didn't sound that much more aggressive, so I am not too keen on them. But just how much louder would the Challenge exhaust be? I don't know... Any soundbytes out there?

Thanks for the help - John

Consider carefully how loud a system you'll tolerate. My 348 Challenge is so LOUD as to require ear plugs when driven on the street (i.e., sans helmet)- hollow cats and no muffling will leave you at least temporarily hearing-impaired after a long drive!

Yup...I did that. I made a jig from a real race challenge exhaust. The lower can or the 348 two can exh inlet and exha tips are the same as the challenge exh. You cut these off and weld them together then weld in a straight crossover with a open resonator tube in the middle. The ch exh does not have a glasspak in the crossover it is just a resonator tube so it is really simple.

Thanks for the help so far.

Billy - Have you done this before? What is the basic idea? Do you only use one of the cans, or clean out the insides? Any leads on where to get a two can system?

Thanks again -

John

John,

If you can't find a real challenge race exhaust you can make one from a 89-91 two can 348 exhaust you cannibalize for parts.

You might have better luck checking at the following places for used gear:

1) eBay
2) www.ferraripartsexchange.com (they have a free place to post ads)

3) www.ferrari-talk.com also has a "parts for sale" and "parts wanted" area...

Hey -

Does anyone have a used exhaust system they want to get rid of/sell? I am looking for something louder than stock. Tubi is an option. I have heard there are challenge exhausts that are very loud, that would be fun. If anyone knows of anything, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

BTW, it would be for a 1991 348 ts.

-John
