Definitely an easy fabrication for a race shop. Look for a local formula car resto/support shop. They make things like this all day. You can take your $50 reward money and put it toward the replacement reel you'll eventually need that retracts the cable.:-)

After a few hundred track miles the hooks that lock the bonnet down broke on my car. I priced them from the usual Ferrari sources and had to laugh at the prices they wanted. After buying two metric threaded grade 8 bolts I heated them up and bent them in the shape of the broken originals. Then I cut off the heads and finished them with a grinder. I defy anyone to tell the difference. It was obvious to me that Ferrari had done the same thing when they originally made them. Some parts are not worth the money people are asking and there are alternatives that retain the originality. Good Luck on sourcing your rod.

Right, Alan. He mentioned that the swivel assembly on the deck is intact. The "travel thing" with the spring cable might still reside in the guide track, retracted to the passenger side. In which case it's nothing more than a hollow rod with the right attachment hardware to link it all up. Pretty easily done by someone who knows what to do and has the appropriate equipment to do it. Painted flat black, it'll look like the original part.

I think you need to be more specific.

I have repaired my assembly in question, and the ROD is pretty basic. The trolley end is different, witha plastic ferrell "cast" around the metal tab that then mates to the "travel" thing that runs in the track attched to the spring cable.

"Knee bone connected to the shin bone" Right Dr. Barry?

What EXACTLY is broken?????????????????????

The gas struts later are totally differnet.
Do they even have the trolley channel on the rail on these later models.

John, I guess I should not have skipped that class in following detailed instructions from people seeking help. but since you asked for someone with access to a salvage car and GT Car Parts does part out wrecks I thought I would make the suggestion. I won't make the same mistake again.

Verell,
Sounds like a good part for your unobtainium supply business. How about I bring my '77 with the proper support rod over, we can measure it up and start taking orders!!

(And I'll get John's $50....as if $50 can make even the slightest dent in the amount of money I have spent on this car!!)

John,

I'm not a rocket scientist and I can follow simple instructions. I'm also not interested in your $50 reward. I'll just repeat that the strut can be easily fabricated at Classic Coach. They do this type of restoration and have the equipment to produce everything from French-wheeled body panels for long-since obsolete Ferraris to such parts as the strut you require. I've seen them do this. They can replicate this part precisely. The alternative might be a long wait for a salvage yard in your area to acquire a 308 of this vintage.

Call them at (908) 352-3939 and ask for either Rocco or Jim.

This one is simple. I'll email you where to send my check.

Go to the Mazda dealer in the Hollywood area. Matt Lemus' old car is there and it has the old strut.

Recommend doing this late at night.

I'll reiterate: I've already tried most of these people (Rutlands, GT Car parts, etc.). Messages that simply say "Call so and so" are likely to be ignored, and are NOT likely to earn the $50 fee.

And to reiterate further: Email me with any leads. If you post a valid lead here, someone else will probably see it before I do, and buy my part out from under me. :-)

Simple instructions, folks. Not rocket science.

John,

I agree with Philip. It would be easily fabricated. Here on the East Coast, I've seen this type of work done by Classic Coach, an authorized coachwork/restoration shop nearby.

I'm interested in converting my QV to the earlier strut. I'm sick & tired of replacing gas springs.
Plus the gas springs get in the way of front bank service. A strut doesn't have these problems.

Hey John, if you finally do manage to find this part, please let us know. I have been trying to locate this strut for about a year and a half in Europe... Thanks, Mick

John
It is a pretty rudimentary part. Tube, wheel "runner" or castor on the bottom that fits in the guide, wire connection to the spool on the passenger side, U-joint on the upper end where it connects to the hood.

If I didn't have one on my 77, I'd have struts put in. If you want to keep it original (which I understand), I'd have thought you can get one made/make one for a fraction of the cost you are envisaging. If you decide to go this route, let me know and I'll get you a digital pic of one.

Good luck John,
I need the whole assemb.
T.Rut swore up and down that they had what I needed,
and then shipped me a unit from a QV.

John,

Call the folks at www.ferraripartsexchange.com The PO of my car bought one from him and I am led to believe that they have them in stock. If you don't see it on their site still call as they have more than is listed.

(OK, img src links don't appear to work here. Image of required part is at http://www.speakeasy.net/~jmiles1/308rod.jpg .)

Still looking for a rear deck support rod for '76 (carbureted, fiberglass) 308 GTB. Already tried the usual suspects (Butch Hooper, Ferrari UK, et al.) This part is not currently in production, so it will probably need to come from someone with access to a salvage car.

I don't need the top mounting bracket shown in the diagram; only the part in red. The manual shows two discrete part numbers for part 2 ("Asta sostegno cofano"): 60334604 and 60073905. I'm assuming the rod is the latter.

I'll PayPal $50 to the first person who sends me a link or phone # resulting in the immediate acquisition of this part at a reasonable price. Vague advice resulting in wild-goose chases ("Have you tried Luigi at Ferrari of Frobozz?") doesn't count. Any price over, say, $200 also doesn't count. Otherwise, drop me a note at [email protected]. Thanks!
