Jeremy -

The first thing to do is determine if the problem is in the potentiometer or in hydraulics / motor.

Easier to get the drift on what I'm going to say if you have the owners manual, but here we go.

If the potentiometer is bad (usually the prob) you can overide it using the emergency switch. In the center consol on the drivers side is a round button...pull it out and attached to it is a long wire with a switch on it. The switch is marked open on one side / close on the other.

Following the procedures you outlined before, when you get to the beep instead of using the normal switch, use the emergency switch. If the top works, then the motor and hydralics are OK and the potentiometer is bad.

Good news/bad news: The potentiometer is a small black box about 1" X 2" and is mounted to the seat rail. If you go to the dealer, they only sell the unit with the entire seat rail assembly and will charge you about $1100 for the part. Good news is that the potentiometer is used by Jag and other cars and you can buy it by itself for about $275 and replace it yourself. Very easy to do.

If the emergency switch does not work, then I suggest you remove the center consol where the switch is that you just removed. You will see the reservior with two big fuses on top. Check the fuses and make sure wiring connectors are pluged in tight.

IMPORTANT - I just looked at your thread...#3..NO. Not foot on brake, but Parking Brake must be engaged...part of the ECU process.

Anyway try the above and if any QQ send me a PM.

probably a problem with the seats moving, check the potentiometer, which is usually the cause of tops failing. It may just be out of synch, or perhaps even shagged.

Good luck

When I got my 355 last month, I could not operate the top despite following the manual's instructions exactly. I just had my car serviced at Auto Gallery, and they refilled some fluid for the automatic top and said it now worked fine.

I got home and still have no luck with the top. I'm following these procedures:

1. Parking brake engaged
2. Key in Position #2 or On
3. Foot on brake
4. Visors down

I use the center latch and lift the top up about 6 inches. The windows come down 2 inces, as they're supposed to. The top beeps as it's supposed to. I push and hold the "retract top" button in the center console and nothing happens -- it just keeps beeping. I know the seats are supposed to move forward, but they don't.

Am I missing a step here?
