Skip, I am also an RROC member and I have had 5 Silver Shadows and ALL of them had an Alternator belt or a BELT related failure. The 1971 was the worst of the bunch. It tossed a total of 4 belts in a space of 18 mo. THE ONLY thing found when looked at by a Rolls mechanic other than myself was the Water pump pulley groove was undersized in the groove and the belt would walk off. Never bought into that answer BUT when I went and got a used pulley from Tony Handler the problem abated untill we sold the car. No clue if that was the fix since we only had the car for a few months before we sold it and the new owner took the car out of the country and have lost touch. So based on the experience I have made that call. The 1978 we are drivimg now tossed and a belt but that reason was simple, the alternator was not square to the pulley system. Sorry did not mean to upset you. |

>IF the Alternator belt breaks, which is common on Rolls,< What are you talking about?? I've never had a problem with belts breaking on my Rollers. I'm not trying to abort the original thread, but George, if you have a problem with alternator belts breaking on your Rolls, you have an underlying problem that needs to be looked into. I'm a member of the RROC, and I've never heard of anyone else having this problem on a recurring basis. |

The good thing about the belts is that they are quite short, not the serpentine type, so there is not much to really go wrong with them. I believe they will last a long time without any problems. But since you do like to work on your toys, you can still have the fun of changing your own oil, filters, plugs, fluids, etc. There are lots of little rituals to perform on these Ferraris. |

Thanks Jeff, let me get this straight. IF the Alternator belt breaks, which is common on Rolls, you can not access it from the drivers area? Looked like there may be an access area behind the seats, but I guess not. Again thank you. HUM, easier to make Pizza than change a belt! When I purchased the car an RROC member told me that the only tools required where a, Cell Phone, VISA and a bottle of wine, now I get it. The belt breaks, you CALL for a TOW, Pay with VISA and DRINK the wine so that the wait for the truck is nice. Take Care |

LOL! Tools of choice...ha..ha..ha! I have some troubling news for you George, the water pump is chain driven and the chain is behind the front cover of the engine. No way to get at it except for engine removal during a full service. Isn't it ironic that on lots of domestic cars the cams are chain driven and the water pumps are belt driven....but on TRs it's just the opposite. There should be three belts on your TR, for the alternator, the AC pump, and the air pump. They are changeable but it's not an easy task. |

How do you get to the waterpump belts, etc if you breakdown? I understand that a VISA card and CELL PHONE are the tools of choice, BUT this "OLDFART" likes to work on his toys.
