George, The calipers need to be removed and a special ring nut socket is needed to remove the axle from the hub assembly. For a little more insight, please see: http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/256120/2434.html?999603649 There may be other writeups in the archives. |

So just removing the brakes lines is all that is needed? Do I need to remove the calipers also? Then just remove the axel & hub assebly as a whole, go to someone with a press and have the bearings switched & then reassemble is all there is to this? I hope so. Thanks, George |

To remove the rear hub is pretty much self explanatory. Just remove the brake lines, remove the upper and lower A arm bolts, and one side of the short shaft axles. I did mine a couple of years ago. The bearings might be a stock size I'm not sure, I just ordered mine from my fcar parts dealer. You should also put new locking nuts and seals on as well. There are two bearings on each side. The bearings should be pressed off and on. I think the cost was around $200.00 or so. But if you can cross reference the bearing numbers you could probably save a bunch, as I did with my front wheel bearings. |

My '81 308 needs new rear bearings on both sides. Is this a DIY job? The exploded view in the parts manual makes it look so, but I heard that the bearings have to be pressed into the hub carrier, and what all items need to be removed to do the job? The shop manual is of NO HELP at all (or at least I can only find the section with 3 sentences about the fronts and jack-zip about the rear). Mine are shot pretty bad (I just found this out). I have done my 308 clutch (with coaching help by phone) before, so I am pretty well mechanically inclined but I do not have a lot of high dollar tools or a shop. What has been the approx. cost to those that have paid to have this done in the past? Thanks, George
