Russ

Thanks for the advice. Unfotunately a 328 will not fit in the budget and to be honest I like the looks of the 308s better, not sure why?? I currently have a Datsun 510 that I run in local SCCA events and I was thinking of selling it and getting a street car for fun. I had intended to do some light track days in the car (my reasons for a GTB and a dry sump GTB at that). Maybe I need to re-think my plan.

My current solution for more leg room was going to be a Momo style race seat but they tend to be uncomfortable on drives over 20-30 minutes. I will give it some more thought.

Take care

I would think that the 308 would have enough room. I put the seat all of the way back and have plenty of room. Did they change the space in the 308s from the 70's to the 80's?

Hi,
I went through the same analysis.
308GT4 has lot of leg and head room. No need to lower the seat either. Bonus is lower cost, better access to engine than other 308's. And the biggest plus of all, the sound of Webers!

I'm 6'4" and 235lbs. with a 77 308 GTB and with the seat back and the backrest back and the steering wheel adjusted a little up there is no head room or leg room problem. You do have to drive with almost straight out arms but if you wanted to you can get a hub spacer for the steering wheel to move it out another inch. Works for me. Steve

Erik,
I found the 328 to have a bit more leg room. Both it and the 308 seem to have the center dash portion in the way of where a leg wants to be. The 328 definately offered more space though. I tried both vehicles. The other thing is the GTS allows open top touring where the headroom issue is reduced. I suppose if you were going to flog and abuse the car heavily on the track the GTB would exhibit less flex, but mine are road cars. My track time is done in a vintage racecar set up strictly for such abuse. The adage that 1 mile of track time is equal to 1000 road miles is quite true from my experiences.
I note some of the reasons folks expressed for buying their Ferraris in the "General" chat area. Buying a car just to bait women seems like it would lead to a pretty shallow relationship or maybe a multitude of them, but after being married to the same woman for 30 years, what do I know.
Glad to share any information with you. I went through the purchase process on two Ferraris and a bunch of other cars in the collection. Avoid the bargain basement deal that seems too good to be true. Key issue with an exotic is the cost you will have to endure long term, not just the initial purchase price. Often, the more expensive initial purchase, in the long term, makes more sense than the savings on a poorly maintained car that will prove problematic and perpetually burden your wallet.

Russ

Those are great reasons to have a Ferrari. I look forward to a report on the seat lowering. I am 6'4" and hope to be in the market for a 308 GTB this summer. I have been thinking about ways to get more headroom after the purchase. In stock form the only reson I can drive them is because I really WANT to drive them.

Erik,
I will be removing the seat to see if there is the option of mounting it closer to the floor, also at the same time to see if a bit of the seat padding on the lower section can be removed without destroying the appearance and form of the lower seat. I went through this process with my 911S and gained 2 1/2" of headroom and have an ergonomically acceptable position relative to steering wheel and pedals. I'll let you know how I make out. They're great cars that would be greater with just another inch of headroom to allow a better positioning of my arms on the wheel. Living in the country allows me to exercise the cars as they were designed for. I bought the Ferraris because I love the design, sound, heritage, acceleration, handling, workmanship, build quality.......... You get the idea.

Hey russ

I was curious what modifications you were going to make to lower the seat in the 328?

I would think that a 355, 360 would be fine. What about a 512 TR.

Changing seats will give more legroom, I've put MOMO seats in mine and achieved approx. 3" more legroom.

Hmm, a concern I had awhile back also. I am 6'4" and really was taken with the looks of the 308/328 series. I ended up buying a 328GTS. The 328 has more available space than the earlier model and will be just fine after I lower the seat an inch this spring. It's a great ride as it is and no problem at all with the top off, although, I usually stow it at home instead of behind the seat. I also have a TR which has more space than the 328 but does as the 328 require a bit of a wiggle to get into. Being 6'4" has it's issues, but creativity will usually yield the desired results. I modified the seat mounting system for a Porsche 911S earlier to give proper head room. Works fine, and after two seasons of driving it, no problems.
The only problem in the Ferraris in shoving the seat all the way back and to full recline, is the arm position on the wheel. Driving with your arms in a straight line will get old in a hurry. Working on a all-around fix that meets all the needs. Glad to share ideas with anyone else with similar interests. I recall reading an article on the Tom Sellick 308 that had some of the seat material removed so he would fit in it better. I'm not sure I would go to that extreme, but I might look into it.

I'm 6'1" and still have a few inchs with the top on. That's pimped out with the seat leaned back. There's less room for my knees, they brush up on the dash sometimes.

i think the cab has less head room than the coupe yet it does have more give to let your head stick through :)

I assume you have long legs. A Mondial has a lot of travel and the seat reclines as far as you want. However, I'm 5'9" but have less than 1" of headroom with the top up. I always drive with it down and therefore have unlimited headroom!

All of the 1960s and 1970s era front engine V12s have plenty of head and leg room for taller drivers.
