It would be a good idea for you to get it inspected. Could be normal on the 2nd gear issue maynot be too. Hard to tell without driving. Your question about A/C is very vague as any car can have the same symptoms. It could have a leak, the compressor maybe shot, the seal on the compressor could be bad, the system may just not be charged, etc. A/C isn't a plague on 308s or 328s. It may not be very efficient but what you describe IMO means the system is non-operational. I think getting a Ferrari is a great choice. I think you will be pleased with your conversion. |

Mark, You don't mention how many miles are on it. An 87 with say 30K miles is likely to have some oil "oozing" from here or there. If it's not actually leaving little puddles, I wouldn't worry about it. The shift shaft seal is one place to look. If it's coming from there, can be expensive due to labor. You could use that as a bargaining chip. As others have said, shifting into 2nd is next to impossible in virtually all Ferraris until warm. Should be no sign of grinding once the car is warmed up. Even when warmed up, it may shift pretty stiff. Each car is a little different. I had an 87 that was quite stiff, but my 89 is very easy. I have driven some others that fell in between. I would do what Tom and JScott recommended and have it inspected if you can. Dave |

My 328 has been dripping a drop or two of oil after every drive. Took it to the mechanic - he couldn't find a leak - said it was most likely caused from a sloppy oil change (the oil filter being upside down on the top of the engine) - I spent some time underneath cleaning everything I could reach - haven't had any drips since. Ah, the simple fix! |

Have it inspected by a qualified F mechanic. I have an 89 328, no leaks, air works, no grind in any gears. Don't take the seller's statement as "normal". Get it check out. You will be much happier knowing what to expect. I love my 328! Great car. |

Valve covers are also places that leak. I generally skip 2nd gear for the first few miles. It's normal. There is a lot of sloping glass on the car. With sun at 12 o'clock, it will be on your shoulder. AC is marginal. My '87 is black and unless the AC is fully charged, car gets warm in the summer. My Porsche doesn't like second gear either when it is cold. |

1) normal and sometimes better tranny fluid helps solve - mobil 1. Should shift smooth once warm - usually take me one or two shifts in the summer time - a little longer in winter. If you here grinding after warm could be bigger prob. 2) most 80s F-car a/c's are poor, sometimes freon will help. 3) leaking is not normal but does happen - without knowing were it is coming from you are taking on risk ..For example it could be oil pan gasket - easy fix. could be weeping from trans cover studs or could be leaking from cam seals. have a mechanic put it on the lift and inspect!. How much oil does it go through? |

Thanks to all who developed the "Buying a 328" pre purchase checklist I found in your archives. This material was very helpful. I do have a few "concerns" about the car that are technical in nature. There were some minor things wrong, but there were also some POSSIBLE big problems lurking. #1) The person showing me the car said that when the car is cold, you shift from 1st to 3rd as 2nd will grind a little until the car is warmed up. Is this normal? If not, can it be evpensive to fix? #2) The AC was not blowing cold. Do 328's have a history of leaking freon, or is there a possible larger problem that plauges 328's #3)There was some evidence of fluid leakage under the car. I was told by the person showing it that this is normal" for 328's. This appears to be contray to what I have read on your forum. We are not talking about a big leak, in fact there was no actuly drip marks on the pavment after 1-2 hours sitting after driving. I know it is hard to determine the possible causes, but are there some probably ones, and how much to fix them. Thanks for any comments, and pardon my ignorance as I am a 10 year Porsche guy making the transition to Ferrari |
