Atlantas Italian Car Day Report October 5, 2002 written by John Montgomery It was a torrid love affair from the first moment. Gazing at her for the first time through a large glass window; she was, in my eyes, the only one in the room. Surely others were nearby yet somehow they remained completely unnoticed. In the past she was merely a dream, a mystery; previously seen only in glossy magazines from exotic places. Her presence instantly captured my hearts undivided attention. Proper etiquette not to stare was quickly abandoned as I intently studied her dangerous combination of curves and youthful lines. Her color was that of a brilliant golden hue, her very radiance seemed to challenge the blazing afternoon sun. Seated in her midst, I absorbed the delicate fragrance of her soft skin complimenting a voluptuous body. She was like no one else; the fiery passion of a native Italian combined with a unique voice that was unmistakably American. Her unforgettable sound resonated through me like rolling thunder. From that day forward her image was forever etched into my soul, and the world would never be the same... The year was 1973, I was 14 years old and she was a bright yellow DeTomaso Pantera on display at our local Lincoln Mercury showroom. Three decades later, like the sweet return of a long lost love, a bright yellow Pantera was once again in my midst. She brought 27 sisters, arriving in unison at Atlantas Italian Car Day! The shores of Buford Dam Park offered an intimate setting, appropriate for this rendezvous and that of 126 other Italian love affairs. Portraits were taken of each one as they made their way through the entrance. Classical music and the aroma of an outdoor Italian caf was carried on the breeze as Giovannis Italian chefs prepared a catered lunch. Italian Car lovers traveled from as far away as Ireland and the United Kingdom. David Beales from England brought a Lancia 037. Marci Haas drove all the way from Plano, Texas in a Ferrari 365GT4. George Price, James Seabolt and Ken Knouff came from Knoxville to show their Fiats. Andy Williamson and Brett Melancon brought Andys Merak SS. The DeTomaso faithful came from 6 states, including Alabama, Tennessee, North and South Carolina, and several points in Florida. For many it was a three-day expedition just to converge on the show field. Real love never considers the distance of the journey. Italian automobiles embody the emotions of the human spirit. Inspiration drives the stylist, passion drives the engineer, pride drives the assembler, and the driver is the object of affection. The image, sound, and feel of these motorcars declare and certify the drivers personality. The DeTomaso owners treated guests to a thunderous 28-engine startup salute during the show, which provoked a brief two-minute rain shower! The Lamborghinis and Ferraris promptly replied with the firing of several V-12s, including all 580 of the new Lambo Mercielagos horses. Italian love songs created from exhaust pipes beckoned those in the crowd who would aspire to one day own one of these thoroughbreds. Heads turn, men lust and women swoon... the definitive justification for Italian car ownership. Italian Car Day is devoted to all Italian car enthusiasts. Owners from Fiat to Ferrari share an emotional bond that ties us together through the hierarchy of models. The Italian automotive spirit is alive and well, passionate and without pretense. Dreamers dream, and the creations of mere mortals aim to touch the divine. Nothing fashioned on earth compares to the timeless beauty produced by Italian design. Gods creation of woman is the only known superlative. Until we meet again! John Montgomery ([email protected]) 2002 Italian Car Day Coordinator (www.italiancarday.com) President, Fiat Lancia Unlimited (www.flu.org) 2002 ICD Show Cars Dreams live at Italian Car Day...
