His name is Dave Bosbach and he works at Dan's Autobody in North Reading, but he does a small amount of "moonlighting" (small jobs only) on the side. If you go directly to him, it's a little cheaper than going to Dan's but he can only take on a limited amount of side work. His cell number is (978) 973-4802. Now I have to figure out how to convince him to do some other work on the car in his spare time!! |

I just got the car back and the dent is fixed. Dave not only did an incredible job (fender looks better than it did before I dented it) but he also charged me less than he quoted me. That is cool. If anyone needs a body guy, I will heartily recommend this guy! Drop me a line. I'll post a picture of the repaired fender later, though there is not much to show. It looks like a brand new fender. Having the work done here in North Reading at a place recommended by Michael Calvo (another Fchatter). It's a friend of his from high school who happens to run a body shop about 1/2 mile from my house. He seems to do excellent work. I stopped in for an estimate last week and looked at some of the projects he was working on. I'm dropping it off today and expecting it back early next week, so I'll post a picture. Jonathan

Hey Guys, I'm back from Maine. Anytime you want to get together, I'm probably up for it as long as I can finagle it with the boss. I'm going to fix that hose issue tomorrow (Thurs) and get it down for a couple of quotes on the repair, including getting those rust spots done at the same time. Verell, I'm so sorry to hear about Cindy's dad. That's a tough one. Please send her our condolences. BTW, I finally got a shark book for you. Best, Jonathan P.S. Anyone going to that Italiano Concourso thing? |

Jonathan, Be glad to take a look. Hmm, If you brought it over, we could put it up on the lift, pull the wheel & fender liner/covers, then take a good look at it from the inside as well. Should be able to completely assess the full extent of what is/isn't bent. JohnB seems to be able to find his way here. BTW, It'll cost you tho, John brought the donuts last time(Heheh)!! Not sure if this coming weekend works or not. We lost Cindy's dad Thursday. The Wake & Funeral are Mon & Tues. However, Cindy may want us to spend time with her mother.

Jonathan, let us know when and where. I am only a few minutes from North Reading so anywhere is fine for me. Regarding insurance. If you have a good relationship with a body man you trust it may be cheaper to pay cash and file no claim. Between the deductible and surcharges the insurance cost escalates rapidly.

John and Verell, I would love to have you guys look at it when I get back. Maybe we could meet someplace. I'm returning on Sept 15th and I have a hose to repair before I can drive it (unrelated to the accident). No damage to lights, grille, etc. Only the fender around the wheel well. Jonathan

Hi Guys, Thanks for the comments. Unfortunately, even though the fault of the accident lies in the poor driving of the guy in the SUV, we did not have an accident with each other (I nicked the guardrail avoiding him) and there is no way I can convince anyone that it's his fault. Even if I had rammed into his rear end, we all know the accident would be my fault. As for the insurance co, I'm still trying to decide what to do or tell them. When I get back from vacation (up in Maine right now) I'll get a couple of estimates from some guys in North Reading that I trust and see what happens. At least now I have a good excuse to get some of the body rust looked at as well. (I'm trying to put a positive spin on it!) As far as taking the car to another place that requires driving on 128...FORGET IT! I will wait a while before I ride that pony again! Jonathan

Jonathan, critical how you file your claim. If the percentage of fault is determined to be the SUV, your car is repaired at no cost to you or your insurance company. The insurance companies are very defined in determining fault. A clear direction of fault is directed at the vehicle that was determined to be "changing lanes". If you can convince the insurance company the SUV was at fault, your home free. Easier said than done, I know from painful experience. Did you damage only the fender or did the light, grille etc appear damaged? Sorry for your troubles, only a couple of towns over. I can take a look if you want. |

Sorry to hear about the dent. I cringe everytime I get on 128. Who's going to do the body work? Have you chosen anyone yet? I've heard good things about Hatch & Sons in Wayland (?). Tom |

Hi NE FChatters, So a while back I asked you all where to take my 308 for a tune up to get the timing checked and the carbs synced. I thought you might like to hear the results! I contacted Boston Sports Car and talked to them about the issues with my car, and discussed what would be involved. I didn't want to go overboard. My wife gave me a budget of $400 for an initial check and carb sync. BSC thought that was reasonable as long as they didn't find anything too horrible. I took the car down there and dropped it off. The place is immaculate and the people there are terrific and knowledgeable. They called me three days later and told me that they couldn't test my carbs properly because my clutch was slipping and they couldn't put a load on the engine for fear they would toast the flywheel. They said they would check my timing and get back to me. They called the next day and told me they couldn't check the timing because my flywheel had been ground too much by the last guy that replaced it and the timing marks were gone. I knew when I bought the car that it needed a new clutch, but I was hoping I could get away without having to replace it until the fall. Basically, BSC said either fix the clutch, or no tune up could be done. I asked for an estimate. My wife freaked. The estimate was $2600 for the new clutch, flywheel and labor. After I was revived with CPR, we gave them the go ahead and told them to keep it to $3000 with the tune up (remember the $400 for the tune up?). They called a few days later to tell me that one of the gears in the transfer case was badly damaged and if it broke, it would take out the whole transfer case and that it MUST be replaced. I asked for an estimate. They called the next day to tell me how lucky I was that they were able to find one for "only" a few hundred dollars. ($600!) So, two weeks after I dropped it off, I picked it up and paid $3,800. Surprisingly, I was so happy to have the car back and running well that I didn't cringe too much when I wrote the check. How about the performance? Yes they improved the car's performance, though I have to tell you I don't know if it was improved by $3,800 worth! Then the clincher. On the way home in heavy rish hour traffic, I was leaving lots of room in front of me because I wasparanoid that I might hurt my car. So, this in an SUV with anti-lock brakes jumps into the open space ahead of me and procedes to do the fastest deceleration from 75 to 0 that he can manage because the traffic on 128 ahead of him stopped and he didn't notice for a while. I, behind him, couldn't see that traffic was stopping because I was in a car that is 3 feet tall at the roof and he was in an SUV. I gave it my all, but ended up doing at least $1000 worth of damage to the car (front left fender) trying to avoid slamming into him. BELIEVE ME I was very close to doing something that would have landed me in jail. I took a deep breath and drove home. So my $400 tune-up turned into a $3800 dented Ferrari and a heartbreak. I was so disgusted that I drove it home, put it in the garage and left on vacation the next day without even looking at it. I can't bear to even look. I was dispondent for days, but I'm over it now I guess. I will get it fixed and cough up another 4 figures. I learned a valuable lesson. Ferraris are expensive! Also, Murphy's law. I have a 13 year old Honda Civic that I have owned since new...200,000 miles and only one minor accident that wasn't my fault either. I have had the Ferrari for 2 months and it has already cost me (easily) 3 times in repairs what the Honda has cost over its entire life, and I dented it!!! Murphy sucks!! BTW, I am happy with the work that BSC did. I believe they treated me fairly and kept me in the loop, as well as attempted as much as was possible to keep the price down. Nonetheless, I won't be able to afford them again for a while! Jonathan
