Blues, Classical or Jazz fans can hit a motherlode here:
http://www.emusic.com

Stunning array of quality choices in those 3 genres, less so in others - along with Universal, hundreds of independent labels such as Fantasy, Stax and Yazoo are still worth checking out, as the first 50 are free, whether you decide to keep the service or not. 250,000 mp3's to choose from.

I used it for a 1 year subscription at 9.99 a month. Some months, it worked out to .01 a song. If you only download one album with 15 songs on it, you're already ahead of the .75 cents-a-song, one-hit-wonder crowd.

I just saw an ad for a site that sells the mp3s for $.79. It will be interesting to see how cheap they get.

I don't know if it is STEALING? Or getting even.

I bought the song on a record, and then had to buy the same pink floyd song on casset, and then bought the same Pink song when it came out on CD.

I think the record industry owes me a few free upgrades. I have paid for "Money Train" about 3 or 4 times in a row already.

Yeah, I think music should definitely be paid for. I just think that they're asking too much.

I still think $1/song is too high. This is a beautiful deal for the music industry if you think about it. Before, we would buy a 10-15 song CD for $12-$18, with money going to retailers, production costs, packaging, shipping, etc. Now, that same 10-15 song "album" would only cost you a mere, let's see, um, $10-$15, for a grand savings of basically nothing. Profit margins are multiplied without having to actually make a CD. Yeah, I know, you get to choose only the songs you like and pay for only them. So what little was left of the "album concept" (song flow) has been eliminated. Ah, progress. They should be selling songs for 10 cents. Actually, what I'd LOVE to see is the record companies "sell" limited numbers of the songs via dutch auction:

"100,000 successful bidders will be the first to download and hear Justin Timberlake's latest horses**t song! Be the envy of all your musically-challenged friends. Bidding starts at $2.50"

Don't know how you feel about the quality of your mp3's but I believe those downloads from mp3.com and buymusic.com are only @128kps. I think CD standard is a bit higher.....

Thanks for the input guys.

I'd rather go the legit route. Not so much because of fear of getting sued, but...its only a dollar after all.

Cheers

they claim to only be going after people with an incredibly large number of MP3s available to download...they're under fire right now: http://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/internet/08/19/downloading.music.ap/index.html

The newest version of Kazaa Lite has encryption to protect your info from the RIAA. You could also check out winmx. If you know someone running Waste or DC++, that could be another option (also encrypted and includes chat features).

Apple iTunes is about the best right now. Close to Christmas, Napster 2.0 will be launched as a pay per download service based on the old PressPlay architecture. They are supposed to have a very large catalog of about 500k songs which should be the biggest legal service.

You can always risk KaZaA if you don't kind getting sued by the RIAA.

pc: mp3.com, buymusic.com, apple is making a pc-version of itunes, and it's apparently close to being released (but they are being tight-lipped as usual)

Anyone know of a website where you can buy mp3s? I thought I remembered seeing adverts for one that sold them for $1 a song or something like that. I just got a crapload of blank cds and want to burn some.

Anyone know their selection of music? Any classical in there?

Cheers
