The biggest keys to losing weight are caloric intake and weight training (cardio is important too of course, but won't burn as much as weight training). But to be totally clear a person's weight isn't an indication of their overall health necessarily. Muscle weighs more than fat does so if/when you do weight train then you won't necessarily see as much of a decrease in your weight as you'd think. That's just because you're building muscle to replace the fat. The muscle you build will also help burn off even more fat. Back to your initial question though, I never used a personal trainer when I work out, but I guess in that respect I'm overly motivated (yeah, I used to be a gym rat). They do provide a great source of motivaion though and if you're pretty new to the workout game they can definitely give you tons of insight. If you really get into working out though and are body conscious then the results will be very motivating. Once you start seeing results you'll want to see more and more. Not to mention the way you'll feel when your body is in good shape. Either way good luck and stick with it. :-)

I was befriended by a local competion bodybuilder @ my local gym ,the conversation started as a common interest in the Ferrari 355
I take to the gym there that he wants as he owns a Mercedes SL500/Mercedes 320/300 ZX/ and a beater Acura.Anyway.
Rob "my trainer friend" strongly suggested "Change the way you eat!!" .Even accompanied me to Costco and I walked out w/ a ton of veggies/salmon/filet "red meat" and some of the suppliments I needed .Further I was instructed to visit the local vitamin supply store and pick up a few other suppliments.
Bear in mind my goal was NOT to become huge!!
Although he is as I reminded him of this more than once.
Three months later I'm exited about my next 3 months .I can see ALL my abs again. My arms and chest are MUCH more defined. And yes even working my legs.
I eat often and more than I did when my body was carrying Much more fat.
I train 6-7 days a week for 1 hour some days (if I'm bored)I'll go back and do another 30 min .cardio or misc.

My schedule is as follows
Mon-chest and tricept
Tues-Back and ABS
Wed-Bicept and Lats
Thurs-Legs (all the areas)
Fri-Misc. smaller muscle groups(shoulders,traps etc.)
Saturday-Cardio
Sunday-OFF (unless I have X-tra time)

I now have an endless supply of energy as well as sleep like a baby. And am confident and proud to take off my shirt (and not wish I was in better shape).
Finding a highly motivated mentor is essential.
I highly recommend a training partener (which I dont have )
MOST IMPORTANT.....
GET some headphones and a CD player and CRANK IT UP!! While you FOCUS!!
It also stops the "people who are there to socialize" from breaking your focus while at the gym.
If you'd like a list of the suppliments I take send me an e-mail as well as my "cutting phase" food menue .I'd be glad to help.

I signed up for a "class" called "train for and run your first marathon". Cost me $100. Six months of training, and I ran my marathon (Long Beach). I found a group of people to run with, which helped tremendously (peer-pressure).

Of about 50 people that signed up for the class, I think 5 of us actually ran the marathon.

This November I will have been working out, at home, for 23 years. I can't imagine how much it would have cost if I had had to have a personal trainer for all these years. Would have been thousands and thousands of dollars. Perhaps an occasional consult with a trainer but I don't see how, in the long term, anyone can depend upon a trainer. I know a number of other professionals who have been working out long term -- not one of them had a personal trainer. You can't buy personal motivation -- not long term.

The key is motivation. If you are motivated you will do everything youre supposed to. Its easy to get lazy and miss some workouts. the second half of this summer i have that problem big time. Its hard to workout and train when the spring racing season isnt for months and nationals are at the end of next july. what do i have to work for? the fall season where rowing is a club sport? i have to stop being lazy.

Yes - a trainer is an excellent way to work out- without someone there to push I get lazy. It's also good to have someone that knows how to use the machines safely - watches you so you do not do an exercise improperly and hurt yourself.

I've paid from $35 to $60 per hour........had both male and female trainers - no difference in quality.

Good luck! :-)

I have been going to gyms for years and lost interest every time until I hired my trainer. The mere fact that I was paying him was the motivation I needed. I lost several pounds at first. I have kept it off andam very happy with my physique.

Depends. How old are you? What are your long and immediate goals? Are you totally clueless w/ regard to what to do in a gym? Do you have a sound sport nutrition background? If you answered "no" to the majority , or all, of these questions (aside from the age & goal question) you should consult a trainer. It's very easy to work out incorrectly, and not only impeded your progress, but highten the likelihood of sustaining injury. Also, nutrition is ~ 60-70% (depends on whom you ask) of a quality physique/healthy self, and , IMO, nearly everyone should get some quality professional consult in that regard. A few friends of mine a trainers, and even after 5 years of regular training I still consult with them.

I have been trying to lose weight and get into shape. Have any of you worked with a private trainer. I have spoke with a few but I am not totally convinced yet. I'm thinking for what it costs I should just pay myself. (It's not that easy) You're opinions would be greatly appreciated.
