I don't think the M3 would have problems passing. I've recently passed on both an '88 Saab Turbo with over 200k miles on it and had only had one tank of gas run through it in a year, and a '78 fiat 131 - both passed easily and I live in the tougher smog test area for california. You can check that the EGR isn't stuck and that it's getting vacuum and if so, you should be fine. The catalytic converter will cut nox by half so it's important too of course. Everyone should remember to get your car nice and hot before taking it to the smog test - go for a fast drive somewhere first.

There's two BAR stations, one near Carson, CA here in the south. The other is near Sacramento I believe. Don't bother going. I'm being very serious here, unless you have an inside connection, they are going to charge you double to do whatever necessary repair work if it fails smog twice a test or test/repair station.

When I was there importing a classic Jag, there were half a dozen cars (Ferrari, Lambo, Lotus) covered in plastic wrap and the techs were sitting around B.Sing. The cars weren't going anywhere.

Its a racket. Fix it and be done with it before you fail a second time.. don't turn it into these state employed losers.

It should, but the car is nine years old and it may not. If it does not, you have to fix it. If you have problems, call the Bureau of Automotive Repairs (BAR) Referee center at 1-800-622-7733.

But a car should pass smog as is from the factory, even if it is a 1995?

Matthew...As the seller, you were actually responsible to have a current smog cert before you sold the car. If the initial 'sniff' is a 'no-go', the smog shop can make adjustments to try to get the car to pass. If a new CAT is needed, then the seller has to come up with the bucks. A dealer may waive this for a deal. When getting a used car smogged, the owner should always pay a bit extra and have the first test done off-line (no phone line connected to the SUN machine to DMV in Sac). If done of-line and your car does not pass, you are not auto-reported as a 'gross poluter'.

Are all new vehicles able to pass California Smog, or is there something that needs to be done to them for them to pass? I had a 1995 BMW M3 and sold it to a man in San Francisco. Did he need to do anything after he bought the car for it to pass smog? I was just thinking about this today. Thanks in advance
