I would say the Folks that HEAVY into Jap Anime. I've heard some horror stories from my cousin that performs English dubs for DrangonBall Z & Cartoon Network. Some of the weirdest people show up at these cons.

I vote for the Star Wars/Star Trek wierdos who want to escape reality by pretending that they're Klingons, or Luke Skywalker or whoever. HELLO...GET A LIFE! While you're at it, get some REAL friends.

General Motors has a division to handle trandemark and licensing requests from manufacturers of reproduction parts. I believe that's because there is a sizable amount of money being made by the repro parts companies, and GM wanted a piece of the action. If you think that GM is not interested in antique car parts, just start manufacturing anything with the GM or Chevrolet logo on it. I'm sure they will be in touch with you when they discover your operation.
When a guy reproduces a Confederate muzzleloader pistol in his workshop, who does he mail the Confederate licensing fee to? Would that be the decendants of Jefferson Davis, or some guy in France whose Grandpa made the LeMat revolver?

Maintaining older cars seems like a very appropriate equivelant to preserving the memory of wars. Buying an older car has no bearing on the current auto industry, other than with replacement parts and car wax. Civil War devotees contribute nothing to the war industry, but they do buy period clothes and sandwiches. So, in a sense, both are a bit interlocked in their nostalgia to another era where style counted for something.

"what part does the Military Industrial Complex play in the economy?"

JRV, I'm not aware that the Civil War muzzleloader and cannon factories play any signifigant factor in today's economy.
But GM, Ford, Chrysler, etc, play a big factor.
But to be my devil's own advocate, General Mills still makes canned biscuits and I'm sure that the re-enactors eat some of their biscuits while they are "hunkered down" around their camp fires telling old war stories about the great
re-enactment battles that occured way back in the 1980s.

Does playing Soldier really lead to harder drugs like seeking WMD?

Folks are forgetting one important fact. People may be "crazy" about old cars, but the automobile industry that produced those cars is a vital part of our national economy and has been for 100 years. Now tell me, exactly what percent of the gross national product does
"civil war re-enacting" produce?

Is vintage racing a re-enactment of some sort? Went to college with some guys who went to the civil war re-enactments, they were extremely knowlegeable of the history of the battles and the correct uniforms, ect. Seems like a good way to better understand our(US)past. It's not my cup of tea, but then I also own English cars, which some would say it pure insanity.

To chime in on doody's point...

Lamest hobby ever?

Do you think there are people out there who hear about enthusiasts who spend $$$ and weeks of time to clean the underside of their cars and the interiors of their exhaust tips and use q-tips to clean vents, all to get a little trophy, and think, boy, that's the lamest hobby ever?

vty,

I live about 5min. from the Antietam Battlefield, about 2min. from South Mountain Battlefield, about 15-20 min from Harper's Ferry, and maybe 30-45min. from Gettysburg so I see more than my fair share of Civil War related stuff. Around here (western MD) it's kinda hard not to be into it a little bit since it's everywhere. I'm sort of a history buff too so I can dig it, but some of the reenactors are soooooper hardcore over the top. I can understand what they do as it's not only a very important part of our history, but it's as close to real war as you can get w/o actually being in a war. I can also understand the medieval reenactors for that same reason too as it relives a part of human history and you get to pretend to beat the crap out of someone, but they tend to be a bit more...ummm...eccentric...but not nearly as much so as the Trekkies. They're on another planet altogether (bad pun intended) :-)

I've seen them do this at a park here in Dallas when I was running. Seem like nice people, just a little slow for me. What you don't see is the 1-2 hour build up. They divide up in villages and role play for all that time before an actual "conflict". I guess I can kinda understand because we use to do this when 8 years old when D&D was big.

My hobby's pretty lame...

taking pictires of girls in various stages of undress.

It all started something like this:

Bella: I'm here to apply for that secretaryjob from the paper.

JR: ok great, please be seated and tell me about yourself.

Bella: well I finished colledge 2 years ago..(jr interupts)

JR: wow, you've got truly beautiful legs...

Bella: thank you....well I finished colledge 2 years ago...(jr interupts)

JR: you have some of the most beautiful hair I've ever seen....

Bella: well I finished colledge 2 years ago, and I wasn't working, but I just broke up with my boyfriend (jr interupts)

JR: Ohhh I'm soo sorry to hear that, did you ever do any modelling in colledge...I mean your incredibly beautiful....you definately have Model Looks...how old did you say you were....

Bella: Realllyyyyyy..

my boyfriend wouldn't let me model

JR: that Bastard !! a guy should never hold a woman back from persuing her passions in life, the things she loves, her destiny.

Bella: you think so, I did feel held down and smothered, he was very posesive and immature....

JR: figures, you need to find a self assured guy, one with confidence, a good carreer, one that could help your Modeling Carreer...hehehe

I gave up knocking other peoples' interests long ago when I realized there's a lot of interesting things out there if you're willing to not give a s**t what people think about you. Dr. Strangelove likes SciFi stuff, and then you see pics from his convention and there's all these hot little girls running around dressed like Lara Croft. The Medieval enthusiasts preserve ancient methods of society and combat, and at the same time they beat the hell out of eachother. I'm know there are a lot of people out there who shrug their shoulders and roll their eyes at us for being Ferrari enthusiasts.

Yeah, i gotta vote for the medieval folks. There is a park nearby that hosts a medieval fair all summer; guys walking around in leather armour, fighting with fake swords; some really strange new age folk tripping on a scene from the Holy Grail movie. Very strange.

I did Civil War re-enacting for a couple years in Bay Area, Union Calvary. History buff, thought it might be fun. Expensive costumes, Sharp's rifles, cannons, horses, etc. Created entire camps in some nice remote areas around gold rush towns. Got huge crowds, tremendous noise, smoke, a 5 pound (load of black powder) cannon shot going off will make you bounce off the ground a few inches...

It was fun but, like some Ferrari owners, many took the hobby just a little too seriously.

Anyone ever watch Real TV on Spike? They showed an accident involving a teenager and a cannon during a Civil war reenactment. As best he figures, there was still some hot embers in the cannon when he went to shove the gunpowder down the barrel. Blew his arm to shreds and he lost an eye too. All in the name of fun. Takes all sorts

Jordan,

Since you are already there, why not take a couple of days to soak in the rest of the island?

A friend of mine (well, his dad) owns an Asian airline. Thought you might appreciate that. :-)

What Asian airliners do you want pictures of? Although I'm assuming the best part of your collection is that you yourself took the pictures.

Cheers

There are even American Civil War reenactment groups in Europe!

I took a class on The History and Culture of the American Civil War, covering the whole war and the cultural aftershocks - great course, the prof was a noted Civil War scholar and reenactor himself.

Read "Confederates In the Attic," by Tony Horwitz, great book written 2-3 years back by a NY reporter who spends a few months touring and interviewing locals to understand the Civil War mystique...

William, nothing can beat that!

I actually may have the lamest hobby ever.

I pay lots of money to fly around the US, and the world, just to stay at an airport for about 2 hours and take pictures of airliners. After Im at the airport for a few hours, I fly right back home :-) Ive got thousands of pictures of airliners from around the world! My next trip is going to be to Hawaii! I will fly out there early in the morning, stay for lunch and spend a few hours shooting planes, then fly back and be home by midnight :-)

Now tell me that isnt lame? Im the only person that wants to go to Hawaii to see the airport and some rare asian planes you cant find anywhere else in the US!

I see the other side of it. From time to time I go to gun shows and see people dressed in that periods outfits. Most people that fought were young men not 60 year old obese guys. These guys walk around in these wool suits sweating and stinking up a storm and the worse part is when they stand next to you smelling like a Frenchman . Then you walk away and you can hear them breathing from the next aisle.

You get to run around with a gun, make lots of noise and smoke & stuff, scream and yell alot and in general misbehave in a manner not allowed by wives and managers.

Plus if your a history nut, you can use that as the excuse to get your wives to go along with it.

I was thinking that those Civil War reenactor guys have the lamest hobby known to man. How did such a bizarre thing ever get started in the first place? Were two guys sitting around one day and it just came up? I'm sure it started out something like this:

Bill: Hey Joe, what are you doing this weekend?

Joe: Oh, I don't know. Maybe relax and watch
some TV then go out to dinner and a movie.

Bill: How about trashing those plans and we both
dress up like Civil War soldiers and run
around in the woods pretending to shoot
each other while dodging snakes and
ticks all the while gnawing down on some
rancid beef jerkey and moldy hard tack
biscuits.
Doesn't that sound great?

Joe: Sounds great. Count me in for sure.
And I'm sure that I can convince a few
dozen of my friends to join us.

Is this whacked or what? It's gotta rank right up there with curling, that bizarre sport where guys slide a giant weight across the ice while sweeping the ice with brooms to reduce the friction. Hello waitress, can we order a PAIR OF LIVES for both groups?
