Ralph, now just get a group of 100 or so people to voice the same opinion and go stand on the lawn of a soon-to-be owner and it might actually pan out...!

James - I know the Mclaren F1 is an amazing car - even 10 years on. I still can not buy the fact that it will do 0-60 in under 3 seconds. 0-60 in 2.4 is equivalent to a formula 1 car - that just doesn't add up to me. An F50 GT which has more horsepower (750HP) and is much lighter - will do around 2.9. I am envious of the fact that you got to spend a lot of time testing and driving it. It must have been a great experience.

Can you secure a place in line with a 5,000
dollar deposit ? LOL Then you can post
here on F Chat to all the posters that YOU
are in line to get the Veyron. Most people
will probably be impressed. We want DES
to get a ride in the car. DES will DEScribe
the car to all the F Chatters here.

Maybe some fool (offline of course) will give you some more money to "cut" in line ? Perhaps a broker will find someone that wants your spot
who just returned from Las Vegas or got lucky
in some gas station ?

If you get stuck with the deposit you can always
go back to the salesperson and ask her/him to transfer the 5,000 deposit towards a VW Bug Cab.

David R. and Admiral

In most cases I would tend to agree with you but I was in this car at the time and I know it well. When it was tested in R&T, it was during 110 degree heat and with a bad clutch and worn tires. After the R&T tests, a new clutch was put in and new tires installed. The tires were scrubbed, clutch seated in and it had received a freshening up in Surrey at the MCLaren plant.

It was run in controlled conditions under strict supervision. The 2.4 was the best of 5 runs. The next best was 2.65, 2.72, and I cannot remember the other two. One was right at 3 as I recall. Run closer to sea level, medium humidity and temps in the 70's.

If you have not been at the wheel of one yourself you cannot imagine the force with which one accelerates. On the 2.4 run there was virtually no wheelspin and it did not bog at all off the line. Just about a perfect a launch as could be done.

I spent three days at the wheel of this car so I got to know it quite well. It is one really fine motorcar.

And here are a few post spin/post test driver. (I asked if I could go over the fence to take these and then asked about damage from the spin. The guy said nothing that a new driver wouldn't fix.)

Well, it is fast enough to spin 3-4 times on the front straight at Laguna Seca this year...the day before it was unveiled at Pebble. I fully expected it to collect the wall but it missed. ALl of my shots of it spinning only showed dirt but here are a few from the track.

Yes, I have to agree with David. There is absolutely no way a stock McLaren F1 will do 0-62mph in 2.4 seconds.

The fastest 0-62mph time I've ever seen recorded for the McLaren F1 was 2.9 seconds; however, in the vast majority of cases, the time is usually recorded to be in the low 3's (and this would also be roughly consistent with the times recorded from the Ferrari F50 and Enzo).

James - There's no way a McLaren does 0-60 in 2.4. Unless its off a cliff. Thats a Formula 1 number. More like 3.4 at best.

0-100 in 6.1 is also optimistic. I think C&D had the Enzo at 6.6 and said that was the fastest test to 100 they had done including the McLaren F1.

Matt, it's actually a W16.

The claimed top speed is slightly over 400kmph; although we won't know for sure until it's tested.

And my guess is that the Bugatti Veyron 16.4, Koengisegg CC 8S, Pagani Zonda C12-S 7.3 and the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren would all lose to the Ferrari Enzo around a windy track.

Matt - at that point, i think the phrase is reversed; rather than miles per gallon, i think you're looking at GPM (gallons per mile)... :-)

DES:

You are going to park it outside your apartment.
You should consider working something out with
your valet when it comes to fetching your cars.

There is also so little parking in your hi rise
apartment.

He will have to give you a quantity discount.

On a more serious note: Imagine if you pick
this car up used with a total of 2,000 miles
four years "after" the introduction. How much
money $$$$$$$ will you save ? It will be
very easy to find a low mile vehicle after just
four years.

Ryan, i agree; i don't think the car is subtle, either but it doesn't scream sex the same way an Enzo or a Miura does... In that sense, at least in my opinion, it's subtle...

of course, i've not (yet) seen the car in person, so perhaps it would be more appropriate to reserve my final judgment until i have.

Um... Anyone have one and wanna stop by my place...? :-)

We tested the McLaren at:
0-60 2.4
0-100 6.1
0-140 10.8

Don't know about the 0-180 but as you can see, it was picking up about 40 mph for every additional 4 seconds on the stopwatch. Of course, we all know that the rate of acceleration would slow down at some point as the coefficient of drag started to have its effect on the surface of the car. I slowed before that point was reached. Ran out of space.

Both are extremely fast.

James G.

I agree that the car is a stunner although I have not had the opportunity to see it in person. I can see that the car will be a marvel of technology and speed. I just wonder that since it is supposedly a production car if it will handle at speed like the McLaren

I guess I am predjudice since a friend of mine let me have his McLaren F1 for three days to drive and I know how it does. It, at least to me, was the chance of a lifetime.

Of course, working now with Audi I am quite anxious to see how the Bugatti does.

I was thinking the same as John... why wouldn't they have taken it to either Nardo or Bonneville and put it through its paces already? Hell, if I was paying $1m for the car I'd want to know exactly what I was getting, even if I could never push the car that hard myself.

But don't you think Bugatti has already tested this and knows what the car will do? Seems like they have a lot to lose if the performance doesn't match the claims.

Once you get to these insane speed aerodynamics plays a larger role than hp. Anyone know the Cd's of these two machines?

James,

Agree that it will be interesting how this monster will handle the twisties. McLaren's F1 obviously did well. Should be exciting.

Cheers

In person the car's a stunner. VW has won LeMans for the last 4 years. They can do anything they want and as their flagship I bet it will raise the bar even on the F1.

I will believe Bugattis claim when I see it run in competition like the McLaren F1 did. Bugatti says 250 mph. McLaren actually tested last year at 244 mph. We know that McLaren did this with a 627 hp BMW V12.. Bugatti should be able to top it with over 1000 hp on tap, but how well will the car do in competition???? That would be the real test. 1000 hp will make anyones car go fast in a straight line. How is it when it come to a high speed sweeper followed a chicane, some esses and a hairpin. Could the Bugatti beat the McLaren through that????

I was passing through Monaco this summer and spent a day in Monte Carlo... at the casino they had this huge setup, with dozens of classic cars and booths about Bugatti - and a 30 foot ramp at a very sharp angle with a Veyron nameplate underneath it. I asked the people setting up when it would be there and they said it was going to be unveiled the next day... crap! Might have been able to stay for the thing the next day, but I was on my way to Maranello anyway :-).

That thing is a beast. Am I correct that this will crush Mclarens tops speed claim on a production car? Was anyone there in Monterey to see it run/spin out? I'd take one if I had the money.
