PeterS:

It is unusual, but when you see public money going into projects that our government has deemed inappropriate, then someone has to put a stop to it. The unpopular positions that the ACLU takes usually put it against the majority of our society. A great example is the defense of the Neo-Nazi in Skoki (sp?). Most of the team in that endeavor were jewish, and the black lash was terrible for them personally. The principal was right, the case sucked. That is generally the case with the ACLU. they end up defending our liberties in cases where everyone is against them. I personally believe that the reason we are all so mad at them, is that we, the electorate has no ethics. We'll take the popular opinion, and when our liberities conflict with upholding the rights, the rights lose every time.

In the 30s there were many writers who wrote about social justice. When I was in school (40s and 50s) these writers were required. I strongly suggest that those younger than I read the book: "It can't happen here" I think the authors name was John Marquand (sp). I'd continue to make reading the "Muckrakers" books required reading even today, instead of clancy, or some of our more popular writers.

It's not the ACLU NASCAR needs to worry about, it's Jessie Jackson after them now

Art..I made this post to throw the question out because I know that this sport is huge, money wise. It seems (nowadays) that whenever there are public groups or organizations that have some sort of religion, coupled with a lot of money, greedy groups get after them under the cloak of 'helping everyone get more freedom' FROM religion (that is in their faces). I'm not a Holy Roller by any means, but I see the patterns in how certain groups use our justice system to run muck with issues. Many may think this is not an issue, but who would have thought (10-15 years ago) that the ACLU would have gone after the Boy Scouts!

PeterS:

The religion thing and racing seem to go together. At the AMA races, they have their own pastor, etc. I think the danger element is such that the racers get the fear of god and that helps them compete. I could never get into it, and I think my generation of people who raced were a bit more of the hellraiser type, than the current, gone to finishing school type of racers.

Peter, one doesn't have to be a member of a radical group on the left to be against government and religion mingling. I think if you polled the country you'd be surprised at how many "normal" people want a strict separation between church and state.

Nascar can do whatever they want.

YOu are right, NASCAR isn't a governmental entity and this won't be an issue. As to your comment about the minority dictating to the majority: that is exactly what the framers intended with the bill of rights. You don't need a first amendment if you're spouting off the majority opinion. The only person who needs a bill of rights is the person who is making statements that the majority disagrees with.

Since 1776.
You don't need a bill of rights to say what the majority wants to hear.

nascar isn't gov't related so what would be the argument?

I am seriously sick and tired of things like this being an issue. when did the minority start dictating to the majority?

The NASCAR participants (drivers, crews, families, etc.) are pretty high on prayer before their races. Is it only a matter of time before the radical groups of the left and the ACLU will butt in? I hope not. I would think that with all the money involved in NASCAR, the ACLU lawyers would be all over this 'opportunity'.
