Yes, Martin please do relay that hotel info. Was it Ventimiglia? How far in advance must you book to get a room? I'm planning to be there 1-2 weeks before the GP. Is it possible to walk/run the GP circuit when it's not on?

Martin, I'd appreciate the name of the hotel, as I've been toying with the idea of spending new year's eve in Monaco. I'm also curious about your time living there, did you enjoy it, how were the people, did you work there? Thanks

Robert I used to live in Monaco for a year and a half.
We went back this year for the first time in 10 years and stayed in Italy in a small mountain village just on the border to France/MC. Took us on race day 30min to drive to MC found parking (secret location) and walked into the City.

The hotel was EURO 85.00 and we stayed 2 nights. Veryt well run with breakfast buffett and very very quiet. Takes 5-10 min to drive from the ocean up into the mountain and the view is just spectacular from any room. Not everybodies vacation destination but I like my hotel quiet and for the day hussle and bussle you can drive easily everywhere. San Remo is just a few minutes, MC, Nice is just a few minutes by Autostrada. Rooms are small (typical) but very clean and modernized.

If you want to info on the hotel I will dig it up for you in files.

Robert,

We always stay east of San Remo which is a 80KM / 1 hour drive from Monaco and prices are "normal" there, even during the Grand Prix.

The border crossing near Ventimiglia is a normal European crossing (highway).

Same goes for the coastal route (Via Aurelia).

I always prefered the Via Aurelia very early in the morning, especially if you get nearer to Monaco (HIGH up over the place) and you can hear the engines already warm up...

Almost a spiritual experience...

Also, try Hotel du Cap in Cap d'Antibes. I spent a number of years around Nice.

Robert,
Spent 12 summers in that area.In order to get "reasonable" hotel rates you'll have to go outside of Monaco especially near or at race time. There are small hotels in Cap d'ail which is just a few mi from Monaco. If nothing available go further towards Nice to Beaulieu-sur mer or Eze sur mer or Eze village.
Don't know what interests you have other than cars. The old casino is beautiful,if the summer Sporting club is open it's a must.Eze Village is quaint and interesting.
For a great lunch at a magnificent small hotel on the lower corniche (expensive tho )la Reserve de Beaulieu is a treat.
Suggest you get a Fielding travel guide entitled the french Riviera which will give you the hotels, museums etc.
If you have any specific questions don't hesitate to e mail me.

Robert, we stayed in Nice during the GP a couple of yrs ago (15-20 minute drive to Monaco). Got a very reasonable rate...<$200. We ended up at the Nice Sofitel because our tour was cancelled at the last minute and there was nothing available in Monaco. It turned out to be very nice.

http://www.sofitel.com/sofitel/fichehotel/gb/sof/1119/fiche_hotel.shtml

From our standpoint, we only spent 6 hours a night in the room anyway... the rest of the time we were in Monaco or Nice. Just a thought if you're on a budget. Nice is a great place.

I'm pretty sure the Cannes Film Festival is in mid-late May... about the time you'll be there. You should probably check that out too if you feel like a road-trip to the west... Cannes is a cool city. Have fun!

I plan to be in Italy in May 2004, 2 weeks before the Monaco GP. Does anyone have experience with lodging that is not $500/ night?
Any must sees/eats? How is the border crossing near Ventimiglia and the route into Monaco?
I would also appreciate any info on great places to stay along the Italian riviera.
