William, I've been to Cancun 13 or 14 times....both the Hilton and the Ritz are very nice....also the Fiesta Americana Coral Beach is right in Cancun, on the beach, absolutely beautiful and an amazing pool...basically all the 3 - 4 star hotels are all beautiful...the whole area is decadent....no shortage of nice diving areas, can easily stay in Cancun and book a diving trip in the lobby of any major hotel.....good luck, have fun....try to see the Mayan Ruins....about 80.00 U.S per person...an all day affair but really cool if you've never seen them in person.

Have fun

Check out their locations on the beach. I remember when I was there and the north end was completely eroded by the current.

I just got unlucky on the weekend I was there. The Drift was too fast and the dumb dive boats were too lazy to take us some were else. So I wasn't sure if they had anything else to offer, or if our dive-boat just got a kick out of watching us fly under water across the reef. By the time your buddy got in, you were already gone 500yards.

Don't sell a good drift dive short. You cover a lot of bottom in a short period. These dives are perfect when you have a camera because you can get 5X the amount of pictures of interesting stuff. A lot of bang for your buck! Again, be watchful of your depth. Cancun has sereral great 20-50 foot non-drift sites.

IMHO, good drift diving is as good as it gets.

The current can at times be too strong, but this is more the exception than the rule. Come to think of it, in Cozumel it's been too fast on less than 10% of the dives I've done down there.

Plus, there's plenty of second tank shallow diving that is not drift diving, where one has the opportunity to do more exploring, etc. Certainly a lot more work, though.

I've done Cozumel, and love the island, but don't like the drift diving.

Is there anything but drift diving?

The current was ripping past way faster then you can swim, so you basicly jump in and let the boat chase the dive group. I don't like being caught in a drift. If I see something I want to check out or look around a different part of the reef I'm screwed. The current was so fast when I went it was like being on a train...fun if you like to fly and see how much reef you can fly over.

I only went once and it was a good trip...but there must be something else in MX?

Cozumel / Palancar reef is the BOM! It can be a great drift dive if the currents are right. You can cover a lot of 'bottom' in good conditions. Be careful to watch your depth. The water is so damn clear, if you are not paying attention, you will find yourself at 130' getting nark'd when you should be with your group at 60'. If you are staying on the mainland and take a cab to the ferry, use your seatbelts. The hacks are nuts there. If you party the night prior, you can snooze in a stack of red lifeboats on the ferry's 1 hour trip! Bring your own BC & Regs. The equipment there stinks.

Here's the hotel I mentioned. It is a little further away from the town, but closer to the reef, giving you shorter boat rides. Many dive shops will pick you up at the hotel dock. We usually dive with Aqua Safari, who have always treated us very well.

Cozumel is right off of Cancun. If you're really looking to do some great diving, Cozumel is famous for its diving. Great drift/wall diving, and my favorite is the night diving. It's a little quieter and a little less of a tourist place than Cancun. Still there are some decent bars and night life.

We go to Cozumel frequently. Palancar reef is some great diving. Usually stay at the Intercontinental Presidente, which is pretty decent and reasonable. We'll actually be there over thanksgiving this year.

I plan on heading to MX some time in late Oct for a weekend of diving. Never been diving in MX before. Anybody know some good places to dive on the East coast. I'm looking for a nice comfy hotel, maybe a Hilton or Ritz and an airport not too far away. Thanks :-)
