Everyone knows I'm a road racing fan. But next to watching amatuer Spec Miata/Spec RX7 or Speed Challenge Touring, IRL is by far the most exciting IMHO. The high rate of speed, the high number of passing, and the close finishes put it towards the top of my list.

IMHO the average moronic American race fan killed CART. Americans don't care for history as much or embrace racing technology the way the Europeans & Brazilians do. It's like "give me a Budweiser, a loud logo'ed shirt and a hero to holler for".
OK, some poor management contributed to the current demise. How much better would CART be if we had the TV & timing/scoring that F1 does. I'm a CART diehard and will be a fan until it's dying day.

My problem with IRL (other than I don't like Tony George) is, how much oval racing can one watch? Especially on the 1-2 mile tracks it just gets old fast.

I think CART is finally getting the right idea, only I hope not too late to save it. They've realized that they need to take racing to the people to showcase the in-person excitement value and get them interested. With so much on TV these days, you're never going to create new fans by hoping they park their remote on channel 217, watch 2 hours of a car race without changing channels, and then go out and spread the good word to all their friends. I got hooked in the 70s when a friend dragged me to the Indy 500, and I never looked back. I remember how disappointing it was to hear when CART announced their "Chicago" race at a paperclip-shaped horse track in Cicero a few years ago. "Better that than nothing" people would say, but I disagreed. It was a short oval with tight turns. Sure, you could see the entire track, but after 5-10 laps backmarkers were being overtaken and it was hard to tell who was where. Plus, it never made sense to me to have these powerful cars race on a track that limited their performance. I'm still holding out hope for a lakefront race someday.

I still enjoy CART racing. Although they sounded better before they lowered the redline. I watch a few irl races a year but not a huge fan. It's a shame what's happened to cart and I wonder if they'll even survive through next season. I prefer watching montoya more in cart than i do in F1.

Well these a CART race here in Miami, essentialy in front of my front porch end of Sept. I have heard rumors that the war may be over & they may regroup cus NASCAR just wiped both of them out . DUmb on CART & IRLs part. Thank God its NASCAR & not Monster trucks that took over, can you imagine ?

I quit caring about CART when they cancelled the Texas race an hour before it was supposed to begin.

IRL puts on a good show, and they are very accessible by the fans

IMHO CART killed itself. I was Director of Marketing at CART during the 1983 season, and I predicted what is happening today and got laughed at.

CART's problem is that they thought the fan base would always be there. No one--and I mean no one--cared about the fans. Those "inside the fence" looked down upon those outside, and they are now paying the price for it.

IRL is just open-wheel NASCAR. Round and round and round... Gotta have downshifts, braking, and turn the wheel both ways to interest me.

"IRL has no innovation, no manufacturer tie in really. The series seems too spec. Cookie cutter"

I thought the IRL had a Toyota, Honda, Chevy/Ford big engine mfg's, now starting to go at it head-to-head? Looks like racing gets a kick in the butt when the Japanese come over and give Detroits BIG 3 a hard time. Even if IRL wants to be spec races, it looks like CART is stuck with that title now that FORD? is only engine supplyer.

Of the old big names in CART, they only have Paul Tracy, and he just lost his tabaco sponsor.

I just cannot get excited about IRL. The racing is stock car racing with open wheels. Cart seems to have lost it's way. I watched the Denver race today. YAWN......

I am not a fan of going around and around in circles.....or tri-ovals. NASCAR owns that style of racing. Even Indy(IRL not F-1) is terribly dull for me. IRL has no innovation, no manufacturer tie in really. The series seems too spec. Cookie cutter cars with no room for innovation. IRL seeks NASCAR style success, CART wants to be a poor man's F-1. Both are poor substitutes for the real thing.

AS far as the split between CART and IRL, I just feel like IRL has no reason to seek a deal with CART, that being the case, one will fold. Most likely CART, which is a shame because at least CART turns right occasionally.

I am bouyed by the resurgence of Sports Car Racing in the US. The ALMS and Rolex series are putting on good shows and manufacturers are supporting the racing. The tie-in for manufacturers is clear and future growth looks good.

Plus, the Pro-drive Ferrari had a great last lap pass of the Corvette to win class at Road America. It doesn't get much better than that.

I used to be a huge cart fan but hardly even pay attention to it. I almost shorted the stock on the rational that if me a hugh cart fan has lost interest then who is watching the product. I missed out not shorting it the stock has tanked. I did not like IRL at all but it has won me over, very close exiting races and contrary to a lot of folks on the board I like oval track racing. That said F1 is still without a doubt tops for me

I know the guys here on F-chat are big F1 fans.

But I still like to look at IRL/Cart when its on and there's no F1

What do you guys think. Has IRL sapped away enough big names from CART to kill CART?

IRL has the money, the drives, engine sponsors...how long can CART last?

I just want the split to be over. Its been crap for the last 7 years.
