Wow, if this thing comes out... and is priced as it says, it will be a great deal/car! Retractable hardtop, 260 hp, and only 2200 lbs (am I converting this correctly?)! plus the neat new audi double clutch take on the F1- should really be something

How does this make any sense? Doesn't Piech own 25% of Porsche? The only company VW is able to compete with is itself. Phaeton vs. A8, etc. --Dan |

Is it just me or does that rear 3/4 view make it look like a Carrera GT, Jr.? If it does come in at a base of >$20,000, I'll be one happy guy. |

VW's Boxster: racy mid-engine roadster wont drain your bank account Volkswagen is going Porsche Boxster hunting with a new 261-hp mid-engined roadster. Dubbed Concept-R, the V6-powered two-seater makes its world debut at the mid-September Frankfurt motor show Powering the open-top VW is a longitudinally, mid-mounted version of the Golf R32s 24-valve 3.2-liter V6 engine (headed for the Cayenne as well). Running direct injection and a more free-flowing exhaust system, the narrow-angle (15-degree) unit kicks out 261 hp at 6250 rpm and 253 lb-ft of torque at 2800 rpm. Production versions will likely offer a range of different engines, including a mild 2.0-liter four-cylinde a folding, two-piece hardtop roof with a large glass panel built into the roof. VW sees its roadster challenging MR2, Mazda Miata and the expected-to-be-announced Pontiac Solstice on pricing, while its performance and curb appeal are designed to push BMW Z4, Mercedes SLK and Boxster.
Drive is channeled to the rear wheels via VWs new six-speed double-clutch Direct Shift Gearbox, also offered currently on the Audi TT. Wolfsburg officials wont divulge the Concept-Rs weight or gear ratios, but the company is already making claims to impressive performance, estimating the car will sprint from 0 to 62 mph in 5.2 seconds, nearly half a second quicker than a Boxster S and 1.3-seconds faster than the R32. Top speed is limited to 155 mph, though officials suggest could theoretically reach 168 mph flat out in sixth gear. |
