1) "Oh Shift" 2) "The Fly" (as in ajustments 'on the fly...') 3) "mSTROBE, or HUD for 'heads up{there's a bike here}, doofus!'" I'm with Jack, just pick whatever name. Hell, call the shift light "Pocket full of Posies" and make it in a gritty hole-ridden font in red and all different font sizes. Then have the tag line "Leave all those Posies in the dust." Use double-image effect heavily. |

Some of the names are great.... I think something "cool, tech" is a good name. "Shift right" is a cool name, but when I say it out loud it almost sounds like I'm making fun of an asian guy saying "shift light" - ya know Here's an example - there is a shift light called the "Raptor Light". Raptor has NOTHING to do with electronics or racing, but it sounds cool. Our market is two-fold. First we get a lot of what you'd call "ricers" buying for the tech factor. The second is guys who race, or motorcycle guys with no tach who buy them. They care equally about the look (many buy them in chrome) and the function. So something that sounds "mean, aggressive, cool, high-tech" is good. I actually like DES's idea a lot - ShifTronix is cool. Sounds high-tech, ya know? These lights are pretty popular in the USA, but sell like hotcakes overseas. They are sold in the Australian equivalent of Pep-Boys, so they are a mass-marketed thing. I'm hoping to get the name going and market better in the USA. Maybe we can rally a few more ideas over the weekend. For the engine computer, I was kind of thinking "GeniECM" (Genie + ECM) but it doesn't roll off the tongue as well as I'd thought. Frank - LOL - that's great - not sure how it would do on store shelves Jason, as for what it does - there are actually three 'versions' of the product. First is an A/F ratio adjuster + data logger for cars - similar to the Apexi AFC. Second is a unit that offers direct control of ignition timing + spark, allows adjustable inputs and outputs, offers traction control, launch control, shift point adjustment, and data logging, etc, etc. It is a much more high-end unit. Third is a small watered down (in functionality) box for motorcycles (which don't need things like data logging for most of our customers). As a whole, it's something that allows computerized precise control of fuel and timing. I'm thinking names like GeniECM, CyberBox, Sentinel, or something like that - something tech-sounding... On the light kits - again something cool, tech would be nice. One other company calls theirs the DoctorFX - implying that it has various "effects". The light kits are 100% about show - bling-bling and all that. So something that would appeal to the 20-something guy who has a sportbike and wants to customize it with chrome, lighting accessories, etc, etc. Keep the ideas coming - let's go over the weekend if you guys are up for it!? Thanks for all those so far! |

I'm not sure the names matter so much as the font and/or graphics you choose. For example, you could call #1 "Shifty Lighty". Now, that's pretty stupid-sounding. But if you write it in a Gothic font, with a big red "X" behind it, people will think it's dangerous and extreme. Perfect! For #3, you could call it "Left Right Blinkers", but be sure to incorporate the quickly-becoming-overdone "West Coast Choppers" Iron Cross format. |

Mike, in regards to # two, what are the applications? Apex'i makes different products for different cars or systems. Example: Their VAFC is a VTEC Controller for Honda/Acuras. They also have an AFC which I believe is an air/fuel ratio. The name all depends on exactly what the product does in the engine and if it is available to all makes. As for the light... 1) SR Shift Light

Peter's questions are important (of course since he's been there and done that). Although I'm sure people here can come up with some name ideas, it may be worth it in the long run to hire a company that does this sort of thing professionally. They will test your potential names on your target market and provide other data that will help you in marketing - package testing, price testing, etc. |

LOL, PeterS...! i'm actually familiar with #3 as i've seen them but don't know much and haven't seen #s 1 & 2, so if i ventured a guess at a catchy product name, it would only be for #3... ...and still i can't think of anything. Mike, if you had pictures or a better DEScription of the products (translation: i'm far too stupid to comprehend your initial post), it might help generate more ideas... Good luck in any case; if creativity is anywhere, it's here... |

with apologies to PeterS for stealing his idea (I hope you don't mind Peter), I have a three products that need names. I was amazed at the show of creativity before, so if anyone has ideas for names on these, I'll give $20 for each to the best name. If you prefer, I will donate the money to the charity of your choice. Product 1. This is a shift light for cars. It is machined from billet aluminum and is adjustable. It's "features" are it's programmability to any # of cylinder, it's small, and it's very accurate. Need something snazzy to call it though other than just "shift light" Product 2. It's an adjustable engine computer. Similar to what Apex'i offers - has a small display box that goes in your car and a "brain" that goes under the hood, and allows you to adjust timing, fuel, and other things "on the fly". It will work on most cars and will also be used on motorcycles. Features are cool looking (transluscent blue case, blue/white LCD display, cool LED's that make the case sort of "glow" etc. Also hooks to your computer and downloads data it logged, etc). Need a nice name for it. Product 3. My company makes replacement tail lights for motorcycles. We have a control box that allows the blinkers to be integrated into the tail light (think Corvette where the brake lights are also the turn lights). Furthermore the it allows the user to program different "effects" so when they are just tooling along, they can have a glowing, or pulsating, or rotating or whatever effect in their lights. Also has different patterns for the signals - so you can have a "left arrow" blink when you're making a left turn, etc. Works on sportbikes and cruisers... need a cool name for it. So there goes - any ideas? I really appreciate any insight, suggestions, ideas, etc, etc. I'll let the ideas pour in until the weekend and let the biz owner decide the ones he likes, and I'll send $20 (either a bill in an envelope covered in paper, or a check, as you prefer) to whoever picked the name for each one they like. Thanks folks |
