mark, sorry for the lack of clarity. I want to build a personal website. Nothign overly fancy...at least not initially. I just want to have my website, host some pics, links, etc.

Down the road, I may want to turn it into something more...but I have small goals right now.

yeah i agree DGS, so much bad design out there, and most of it totally useless. But every now and then people get it right.

At the moment we are doing XML feeds into flash and making it work :-) Its all very exciting (in a geeky way you understand).

But we've moved away from keeping it "simple" (although we are very strong on useability) now, we're going flash tastic.

Good design is good design - it must look good and work well.

god i am a geek

I use emacs. (And a copy of the "Nutshell" HTML book.)

I've seen the explosion of java/activex/flash/shockwave sites on the web.

I've seen maybe two of them that actually do anything you couldn't accomplish with HTML and Perl CGI forms -- without bogging down the server and client computers.

KISS: Keep it simple, stupid.

I wish I did not have to work! I would give my left nut to have the time to be a Photoshop & Dreamweaver pro!

I'd definatley use Dreamweaver - very powerful, very easy to use, and we use it in my office extensively. Its not daunting at all and very easy to use once you've done the easy tutorials. I learnt how to use it with no knowledge of web programming.

But it think you may be talking about two seperate things, apoligies if Im wrong. For webdesign (ie making pretty graphics and designing the layout of your site etc etc) you want to be using Adobe Photoshop, or maybe even Macromedia Fireworks (though i prefer photoshop); For web development use Macromedia Dreamweaver.

Most of all i think its important to have la passione for creating a site that people will enjoy.

Numerous excellent freeware choices here:

http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/Software/Freeware/Editors/HTML/

Of these, I've used Eversoft 1stPage 2000
http://www.evrsoft.com/
and had no complaints, but I do WYSIWYG by "hand" now.

If you're interested in Flash, give Swish a try. http://www.swishzone.com/

Macromedia, (owners of Flash) licenses developers (such as Swish), who, in turn - give/sell their own user-interface of Flash to individuals such as, well - you or me.
What fer Macro do dat, you say?
In the long run, Macromedia benefits by implementing better interfaces due to greater input from users of Swish. Reason being, Macromedia's Flash program *was* notoriously difficult to learn, but Swish led the charge on making it easier for users to make Flash pages or banners. Swish is still much easier and much, much cheaper.
Reminder: What it puts out is Flash.
Caution: Don't go overboard with every effect known to man!

Scott, don't be too daunted by Dreamweaver. It's not so bad once you fiddle with it for a while and it's a great program.

gracias. after i get the domain name registered, and do some layout ideas, I'll probably be sending you an e-mail. I already have frontpage, so I guess I could fiddle around on there and see what I can do.

I'll certainly get more on top of this project when I get a new digicam.

Scott..Unless you have a PH.D in computer science, stay away from Dream Weaver! It is a very powerful program, but the book to learn it shadows an LA phone book! FrontPage is great. Its easy to learn and you can do just what you want. I can even help you get started.

Is there a good, easy to use webdesign software I could pick up for some light webdesign? I just want to make a pretty simple site for myself (links, pics, etc). I've heard dreamweaver is pretty good. Thoughts?
