>>>My parents bought their 3 year old grandson an American made pedal trike for Christmas - it had the warning "do not use for commercial purposes". Sounds indeed dumb at first sight. BUT... The "commercial purposes" intended by that warning are "renting out", use at carnivals etc. Much heavier on the "apparatus" and as Bill Hart pointed out, those warnings don't "fall from the sky" but are there usually after somebody has attemped "it" and the manufacturer is CHA... I bought a chainsaw a couple months ago. The manual had TWENTY+ pages of warnings before saying thing one about the saw. |

>>They further believed cold chickens provided a better simulation of a bird that had tensed to prepare for the impact.<< That would be a shi!!y realization to make. |

Subject: Rocket Science This is allegedly a true story: Sometimes it DOES take a Rocket Scientist!! Scientists at NASA built a gun specifically to launch dead chickens at the windshields of airliners, military jets and the space shuttle, all traveling at maximum velocity. The idea is to simulate the frequent incidents of collisions with airborne fowl to test the strength of the windshields. British engineers heard about the gun and were eager to test it on the windshields of their new high speed trains. Arrangements were made, and a gun was sent to the British engineers. When the gun was fired, the engineers stood shocked as the chicken hurled out of the barrel, crashed into the shatterproof shield, smashed it to smithereens, blasted through the control console, snapped the engineer's back-rest in two and embedded itself in the back wall of the cabin, like an arrow shot from a bow. The horrified Brits sent NASA the disastrous results of the experiment along with the designs of the windshield and begged the US scientists for suggestions. NASA responded with a one-line memo: "Defrost the chicken." |

Hey, the instruction manual never said anything about using an electric drill while standing on an aluminim ladder in a swimming pool.

Funny thing is, most of these notices only show up after somebody tries to do what is warned against; the manufacturer may start with the proposition that nobody would be that stupid, but out of prudence, they must cover potential liability. It probably says more about the great unwashed than it does about the lawyers, but that's my take... |

One of my favorite sites is the Naval Safety Center particularly the picture of the week which has some truly amazing pictures of safety violations and accidents. Here is one of my favorites:

There was a hilarious one I read for a ladder written by a lawyer a while back, I saw it on a lawyer joke website... I'll see if I can find it (unless someone knows it already). |

DES..That is actually a good warning label on the pen. The 'climbing type' clip business for non-climbing applications is big biz. That is actually one of the better, prudent warnings...Hell, I would never have known it. These cheap clips are for general use that use soft aluminum and will not support weight of an average climber...Good catch though |

PeterS, i have a little pen at home that i bought from who-knows-where - probably the hardware store (impulse purchase)... the pen is only a few inches in length, maybe two and a half, but has a big mountain climbers'-type hook thingie on the end; i guess this is so you can clip it to your belt or bck pack or whatever... On the clip, it actually reads that the clip is not for mountain climbing... i swear... i laughed so hard when i saw that... |

Here's a few that I just could not believe! How stupid do manufacturers think we are? On a Sears hairdryer: Do not use while sleeping On a bag of Fritos: You could be a winner ! No purchase necessary. Details inside. On a bar of Dial soap: "Directions: Use like regular soap." On some Swanson frozen dinners: "Serving suggestion: Defrost." On Tesco's Tiramisu dessert (printed on bottom): "Do not turn upside down." On Marks & Spencer Bread Pudding: "Product will be hot after heating." On packaging for a Rowenta iron: "Do not iron clothes on body." On Boot's Children Cough Medicine: "Do not drive a car or operate machinery after taking this medication." On Nytol Sleep Aid: "Warning: May cause drowsiness ." On most brands of Christmas lights: "For indoor or outdoor use only." On a Japanese food processor: "Not to be used for the other use." On Sainsbury's peanuts: "Warning: contains nuts ." On an American Airlines packet of nuts: "Instructions: Open packet, eat nuts." On a child's superman costume: "Wearing of this garment does not enable you to fly." On a Swedish chainsaw: "Do not attempt to stop chain with your hands ." |
