Frictional losses convert the power from the engine into heat...most of the numbers I've heard are around 15-25% loss from the engine to the wheels...the power has to go from the engine, thru the gearbox, thru the driveshaft, thru the differential, then to the wheels...each little part isnt 100% efficient, so it all adds up

4 wheel drive cars would have higher losses than a 2wd car...also, a manual tranny car loses less than an auto...

Can someone explain to me how a car can loose so much HP from the engine to the Wheels?

I understand 1/10th HP loss but I have heard as high as 1/3rd HP loss. WHY?

How do some manufactures make cars that lose less HP and some Manufactures make cars that lose more HP in the transfer? You would think it would be a main priority to save HP in the transfer of power.

Would a 4 wheel drive car lose more or stay the same?
