L' Shana Tova, happy and healthy.

For those of you that have questions regarding Life and Tradition, there are two great books by Alfed Kolatch called The Jewish Book of Why 1&2. You can find them at B&N or Borders. They explain every question you might have in a very simple manor. Great if you are secular, but your kids have questions.

Happy New Year Bruce and to all our Jewish friends.

A holday for reflection, no matter how bad it looks at times, we're still very blest, especially to have friends as we do here.

Texts selected from The Tanach

Leviticus 23:
23 And the Lord spoke unto Moses, saying:
24 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying: In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall be a solemn rest unto you, a memorial proclaimed with the blast of horns, a holy convocation.
25 Ye shall do no manner of servile work; and ye shall bring an offering made by fire unto the Lord.

Numbers 29:
1 And in the seventh month, on the first day of the month, ye shall have a holy convocation: ye shall do no manner of servile work; it is a day of blowing the horn unto you.

2 And ye shall prepare a burnt-offering for a sweet savour unto the Lord: one young bullock, one ram, seven he-lambs of the first year without blemish;

3 and their meal-offering, fine flour mingled with oil, three tenth parts for the bullock, two tenth part for the ram,

4 and one tenth part for every lamb of the seven lambs;

5 and one he-goat for a sin-offering, to make atonement for you;

6 beside the burnt-offering of the new moon, and the meal-offering thereof, and the continual burnt-offering and the meal-offering thereof, and their drink-offerings, according unto their ordinance, for a sweet savour, an offering made by fire unto the Lord.

Ralph - you seem to go to temple more often than I do. I usually go biking, then sailing on Saturdays. I must admit that I did go to temple ALOT in the past. 12 years of Yeshivah before college & med school. I probably cut as much as Bruce though (had to perfect my outside jump shot).
I'll be your vice rabbi.

Ralph, my goal is to have the Ferrari by the time I'm 25, and the F40 by 35 (I have a few cars I want to get in between; 512tr, 355 Spider, BMW 3.0CSL, Jaguar XKE, etc..) Once I'm out of school I'll get in touch with you about those pretty girls!

Kenny I did not know you were looking for a used
one. "18." Wow ~ when I was 18 I had a 1968 GTO that I paid $1,400 dollars for. You are going to have a F-40 by the time you are 29 at this rate. I am going to tell our S/F (Lith. descent) community hear to send some photos of some pretty girls up north in a few more years.

Ralph, seeing that I'm 18, 100k is just a bit out of my reach- but a used C4 can be had for 60 +/- in good condition... I'm spending the weekend with my extended family so I'll definetly take a look around.

Kenny the C4 with aero package is very close to GT-3 territory. Just a few more dollars. You are single. MSRP 99,999 for the GT 3.

I knew she was too old for you. She is very pretty. It would be nice to find someone for her.

Ralph, unfortunately she is a few years older then me, but I'll keep my eyes/ears open. Thank you very much about the Z3- great little car, tons of fun! Next sports car'll be a Carrera 4 w/ aero package, and then I'll move up to an 512tr or something of that nature..

I'm with Bruce here, not very religious at all, I got a temple maybe five times a year.

The basic questions are the hardest ones to answer. I spoke to a well trained rabbi. The Jewish calender did not start with a specific event, but probably at the beginning of recorded history. The latter was based on the use of clay writing, which originated from the same place as Abraham (i.e. Aram, which is the modern day Iraq). Abraham lived around 3500 BC, so the "calender" preceded him by a few hundred years.
I'm sure there are other interpretations as well.

Bruce: I am not qualified as the F Chat Rabbi.
I am honored that you have nominated me. Did
I win anything ? Perhaps David Rodsky may
work ? Also: I do not even own a Ferrari.
Ferrari's draw too much attention for my tastes.

I do not know enough about the Old Testament
and Torah. My guess is that the first year
was ( mispelled here ) Beraysheet ( Beginning )
This was the first book.

Certainly there are other goy members here who are
more qualified. Now if you are looking for a
Middle East intellectual ?

Hey Kenny ~ Time for a shidduch ?

I know of a very pretty girl in Manhattan
38 years old divorced with a child looking
for someone from S/A / Lith descent ?

Let me know; if you know anyone. Nice Z-3
you have. They are fun little cars.

You all do not want to go to Synagogue ?
Don't be so lazy.

I was conservative and ended up with an
Israeli. She wants me to take our kids
quite often. I go often on Saturdays.
All this and my parents gave me a goy first
name !!!

Bruce: you don't like Manachevitz ? Try
Streights or Mothers.

Poor Rodney, like me had to put up with bland
food. Grandma from Kew Gardens Queens ( Just
down the corner from Pastrami King ) via the
Bronx made boring chicken soup. Fortunately Miriam loves to cook with passion and makes all kinds of exotic and delicious ( Lamborghini style ) spicy sephardic dishes.

HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Happy new year, guys! I have a question, though: So if it's 5764, when does it go back to? Does it go back to a certain event (in Abraham's life?) or is it a certain date?

One of the tenderest memories I have of my Dad is how proud he was when my brother and I sat next to him in Temple.(even tho neither of us wanted to be there and didn't go after he passed)
So-----go with your Dad-he deserves the "nachas"

Hmm Ralph, sounds like my mother. What's worse was my grandmother's food. On the other hand when we had people over when I was young, I would always cook Italian.

I did help my Grandmother make Gefilte fish from scratch a couple of times. Overall if I am grinding stuff, I would rather make meatballs, much less messy!

Besides she is a lousy cook. Her food is

Sephardic food is ten times better. That
food has passion !!! Next time you get
