Same thing happened to a guy on my board (minus the burning to death). He ended up walking away relatively unharmed- but as you can see from the pictures, his car wasn't. Shame.

Wow that is sad. These fun runs always have
someone that is determined to win.

Can't let someone else pass etc.... It is a
fun run not a race.

Have fun and be safe.

Your link is dead but that accident has been brought up on a few other car forums. It's really amazing how many cars they destroy. The crash where the guy burned alive is one of the more disturbing stories of street racing I have read recently.

Some Sad Stuff at Newport Meet

quote:

On the Santiago run, the Immola Red M3 spun out of control, flipped upside down, and one person died. no joke, his name was James. he burned to death because he was wedged in the back. this was a result of the driver going way over 100mph on a semi-sharp turn and gravel chipped his car. the front passenger survived with no injuries, but the driver lost his car, and he is badly cut/bruised.

Here is my perception of what happened:

I was in Scott's car (the guy with the E46 328i) and we were going about 60 and when we turn that corner, we see a mountain of flames. I was saying to myself please dont let it be one of the M's. when we got closer to the scene, i saw the M rim, and I saw that it was the Immola Red M3. I jetted out of the car, and started running towards the car, I hear some guy screaming for help, then when I get closer to the car, I hear three pops so I backed off. then the screaming from James ended. I knew that his life was over. there was nothing that anyone could do.

One of the guys is another M3 say his best friend burn to death, it wasnt a pretty site. There were a total of 4 E46 M3's , 1 burned down, 1 passed them up, and 2 stayed behind and helped out.

Then a whole bunch of motorist from both sides of traffic stopped their cars, and began helping out. one lady in a red civic hb had her window rolled down and said "thats what you fuckers get for street racing" everyone tried to call 911, but it was giving us the busy signal. and finally someone got through.

After Scott called 911, some guy in a truck comes up to the silver E46 M3 and asks "whose car is this" and then Socal M3 was on his cell phone, and says "its mine" and then the guy said "well come over here and sit on the curb, your being detained" after that, he busts out his badge. and then one passer by said "your a cop, thank god" and thats when me, scott, and the two guys in the TI's said fvck it, we dont want to get involved, so we turned around and left, coz we couldnt handle sh-t like that.

I think the reason why this happened was that the guy in the Immola Red M3 wanted to beat the SMG Black M3, we all knew that he wasnt going to do it, the SMG M3 was just too fast, but then this guy was so determined to beat him, and he just couldnt do it, which resulted in him causing him to lose his car, someone else's life, and putting someone else in jeopardy.

quote:

From what saw from the back of the pack was all but dust. The silver and violet m3 careened for the side of the road to what we thought was just a spinout on the side of the road. I didn't know this canyon so I didn't realize that there was no side of the road; it was all a slanted dirt hill. What I saw next was horrifying. The Imola red M3 was upside-down, and fully engulfed with flames that shot 10ft high. The first thing I saw was Dave, the driver, running out of this car covered in flames. He did the roll maneuver while everone in our cars patted him down the best we could. Rocks and debris were scaterred for at least 100ft in all directions. The bumper and part of an axle with a tire still attached to it could be seen right where he made impact with a electric pole. It nearly shattered and was tilting to one side.

Here the thread about the guy who rolled a bunch of times.

this will interest you all

quote:

Well, I was on my way back from the local waffle house at about 11:30pm and came up on Goldmine Rd. (anyone in the area should recognize this road as that long straightaway). I was tailing a friend who, once we got on the straightaway, hit his brakes and waved me around. I know I flew around him and laid into it, but I don't know how long I got on her or how fast I went etc.
Anyway, at the end of this straightaway is a drop into a slight turn. I remember slowing down when I saw the drop, but right when I came to the other side (I don't know if I jerked the wheel, etc.) the back end slid out to the left. I almost made my way into the ditch on the right side, but got her back for a split second only to have the back swing out the opposite direction. This time she was gone; no amount of correction would bring her back. All 4 tires were screaming as I shot into a ditch. I remember seeing airbags deploy and thinking "that wasnt all bad." It was then that I realized that the car wasnt on the ground anymore.
I saw the ground hit the roof of the car and the windsheild bust, but this is where we hit a black hole in my memory. My next recolection was standing beside a small home watching my car burn.
Sometime in between, I rolled 98 yards and landed 10 ft from someones front door, got out of the car, went to the door of the elderly couple's house, called my parents, etc. I'm not sure, but it seems like I remember sitting in the driver's seat and seeing a nice size fire coming from the engine in front of me.
Anyway, I walked around in circles for about 15 minutes watching my car burn. I couldnt remember if there was anyone else in the car or where I was coming from or what happened etc. The paramedics got there and loaded me in the ambulance and then my lung collapsed. The driver took her time going to the hospital, no siren, while I was in the back fighting for conciousness. I just got home from the hospital last night, lung still somewhat collapsed.
Oh yeah, police report was that I was doing 100 or more mph. Slid 215 ft, rolled 295 ft. In November I'm probably going to lose my license. They obviously think that losing my one true love and almost dieing isnt enough to teach me a lesson.

Hey Guys,

Just spotted this on a BMW forum where someone burned to death on a group drive here in CA:

http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...t=red+e46+wreck

On the same site just recently THREE OTHER guys totalled their M3's and were lucky to escape with their lives. One guy got the rear end light on a small hill at over 100 mph, rolled his car seven times and watched it burn up. Another guy hydroplaned on the freeway and spun backward into a tree, then flipped upside-down into a ditch full of water. A third guy fell asleep at the wheel with his girlfriend. All escaped unhurt, but just reading about so many of these in close succesion really gives me pause, just like after what happened to Jens and Amar.

We in SoCal have a group drive coming up this weekend. Just a reminder that we all need on occasion to be safe.

Cheers,
~C
