Dan, apparently he wrote in the Frontlines section of Car magazine. I have three issues between December 1999 and June 2000 and he's in all of them. I will scan those articles soon. Perhaps you could check all of the 1999 and 2000 issues of Car magazine if you have them? I would be happy to scan them and let you/anyone else have copies. -f |

No clue, I checked online too. CAR, unlike EVO, doesn't have a website. No worries, I'll sort through them in detail. --Dan |

Dan, no idea which issue it was. Hmm, how would we find that out? Wish it was all online and searchable.

Didn't know the details of the crash but I thought it was a rather high speed crash until I Google-ed it and found this: >>> He drives the family around in an Audi A8 and drives himself in a McLaren F1. He was in the McLaren when he rear-ended a woman's Rover Metro while driving along the A6, which of course made all the tabloids the next day. He wriggles around, raising an eyebrow at the mention of it. 'Ah yes. The prang was embarrassingly low-speed and therefore not related to my handling of the car, thank God. I was very, very lucky.' <<<

Didn't he rear-end an old lady in a tiny little hatchback? I believe I read it was cold brakes coming on too late and locking up the wheels, but then, what else would someone say?! McLaren was quite red-faced about the brakes, so it got repaired rather quickly! |

I saw it in the city. I intend to check out the Barnes and Noble near me to see if they carry it. I would think the one by you in SM would carry it, as it's much bigger. EVO sells out quickly. You are welcome to borrow my copy. |

Well Faisal, I saw them today... I was late and I was stuck in a line wating for a friggin meal when they went back to Moffet (sp?). I saw them to a few stunts. It was pretty cool. As for the TVR, it looked like a coupe... hmmm... I donno. I also saw another car, this red one, I forget the name, it's Italian but uses an American V8 modified from a Ford unit. Pretty cool. When I get my T440R we should race. ;) Ha... I wish. |

It's a quarter to three in the morning and I am still up, finishing up some stuff. Decided to check back here and what do I find...another local! Where have you been during all the Bay Area gatherings?? Sorry, haven't been to Berkeley lately, so it wasn't me. My car's blue. You are the second person who's telling me about this TVR, so I think there's a new arrival in the area. Was it convertible? Mine isn't, and the other person who saw it, Gordonie, said that it was a convertible. Which means it can't be a T350 or a Cerbera. So it's either a Tuscan or a Chimaera or Griffith. He also remembered a greenish color. Supposedly it has Euro plates, did you notice? Curiouser and curiouser! Don't think Blue Angels are performing tomorrow, but I am pretty sure they will be practicing. You should be able to find out on the web if you search for Fleet Week. Or just look out over the bay! Treasure Island is an excellent place to watch from, by the way. Let's meet up sometime. Best, Faisal.

Finally looked at an Octane, not at a local book store, but in Union Square, where u read yours. That magazine is great. I think I like it as much as EVO. I'm gonna go see the Blue Angels this Sunday too. (Do they have it tomorrow as well?) Faisal, were u in Bekeley tonight? I saw this greenish car, looked like a TVR... actually it looked like the new T350C, but I doubt it was... Isn't your car silver though? I forget. Life is good, yes. And I thought the Bay Area was dead...

Peter, much obliged, very, very kind of you. Driving Ambition is about the McLaren F1. Everything you could ever want to know. Great drawings, pictures, writing, etc., etc. There's not enough superlatives to describe the car, or the book. Except after you are done with the book, you will have an isatiable appetite for every bit of trivia related to the McLaren F1!!! Oh well, it's a worthwhile cause. |

Forgot to add to my previous post... I don't have that book by Doug Nye. What's it about? He normally specializes in Marque histories and racing events. |

I have a couple of Gordon Murray interviews I could scan for you if you are interested. His best article, which he wrote for Car magazine, I can no longer find, unfortunately. He talked about Ferrari's megabucks wind tunnel, and how he made do with a box truck for about 1/30th the cost. Applied engineering at its finest. Also, do you have the book, Driving Ambitiion by Doug Nye? It's simply awesome. I had to wait 6 months for mine, and happened to be in Hong Kong when it arrived. My wife made the mistake of mentioning that it was finally delivered, and I had her read me a few chapters on the phone each day. She *hates* that book! I can't wait till they start distributing more books online...

Peter, would you mind scanning/emailing it or copying/faxing it? If it's not too much trouble? I would really appreciate that. [email protected] or 650.875.0155 (please let it ring 15-20 times to turn it on, I have it switched off because the whole world thinks I need toner and timeshares).

Every now and then I have caught an article by Gordon Murray. Even his asides are food for thought. And Jeremy Clarkson--he's simply hysterical!

Had some time to kill while in the city this afternoon, so I went to the bookstore off Union Square. I had a quick read through Cycle World and Octane... Octane: Refreshing, nice magazine. It seems Rowan Atkinson has a regular column in it, so I have to subscribe and dig up the two issues I have missed. Mr. Atkinson is one of my Renaissan Man ideals--degreed engineer, accomplished and talented entertainer (and funny as hell) and a noted motorsport enthusiast and driver as well as one of the fortunate people on this earth who gets to call a McLaren F1 his own. I am really looking forward to reading his stuff! In Cycle World I came across a gorgeous bike that Ducati had originally developed for MotoGP, and is now seriously considering releasing to the public. The markings on it said Desmodieci, but I don't know what it will be called. If it is made available, and is engineered well, I intend to get one. The only link I can find online is an Italian site, and the picture isn't too good. Here it is: Click here Also, does anyone else like Mr. Cameron's TDC column in the front? I read it religiously. This month's issue has a really good article on running your own race, in a manner of speaking. Finally, it's fleet week in San Francisco. The Blue Angels' jets screamed by overhead every few minutes, and their lumbering cargo plane (think it's a C-130?) dipped alarmingly close to the buildings. The last time the fighters came around, they did a full afterburner climb and the noise was simply shattering. Long after they had disappeared into the sun, I could faintly hear all the car alarms they had set off. I think my ears will be ringing for a week! When I go to see them on Sunday, I will be sure to take some earplugs. Sunshine, happy people, cars, bikes, planes, ocean views, what else could you want? Life is good. |
