FYI: The snurfer (from which the snowboard evolved) was invented by a friend of mine's father (Sherm Poppen) right here in my home town of Muskegon, Mi.

Hey Ross-

It does suck right now. When I was there in 2002, it was at 1.5. But, in comparison to where the Euro is, it is more in my favor.

I have really been looking into either Zermatt (thanks Dan) and into the Junafrau region.
A good friend of mine that I go skiing all the time with, went to Chamonix 3 years ago, and loved it. So, I have thought about that as well.

All in all, you all have provided great starting point to look!!

rosso, have difficulty understanding your statement that the CHF/$ is favorable to the usa at the moment.....it sucks big time. it wasn't so long ago that it was 1.50+, now its around 1.30. but anyway, currency aside, if you want great boarding country and you can handle the steep offpiste deep snow, then go to chamonix. home of the free riders and board headcases. but be warned, it is hard core.

Ah the Lauberhorn. I remember watching Franz Klammar run it. Amazing. (His Olympic run was the most increadible run I've ever seen). The North Face I leave to the younger guys. :-)
Downhill Racer was filmed there also as was the Bond Film.
If you come this way I reccomend the Highland Bowls and the Couloirs at Jackson.

james

the train goes from the "scheidegg" to the "jungfrau joch".
i assume you meant the way from jungfrau joch train to the eiger (if there is any at all) and not the "eiger nordwand" ;-). not even a local guide would help you with the nordwand.
the way down from the scheidegg to wengen is the famous downhill ski track "lauberhorn".

the schilthorn is on the other side of the valley above of mrren, which is a nice place also.

Rosso, I go every year too, here in Toronto. Did you see it last year with the bat suit? Gliding along that canyon or whatever it was? Breathtaking.

I've skiied at both Davos and St. Moritz. They were both pretty good IMO; though, I liked Zell Am See in Austria better than both Swiss locations.

Maybe this is a stupid question, but are you an actor/director or something? I just wondered why you refered to it as 'my' movie.

They take a bottle of Krystal and put it in the freezer for about an hour. They take it out and bring it to your table and hand a sword to the lady you're having dinner with. They hold the bottle and have her put the edge of the blade on the bottle. They tell her to quickly run the blade up the neck of the bottle, away from them towards the cork. The head of the bottle slices neatly off and they serve it. The edge of the bottle seems to shear off smoothly. Surprized me.
The train rides and tram ride are def worth taking. There are great coffee and pastry shops in Interlaken. I believe the train runs from the airport directly there. If you climb the Eiger make sure to take a local quide as it's a bit tricky.

Rosso,

I've seen the champaign opening that Mr. G. refers to.........I believe in the very olden days, before corks were used, that was the "proper" way to open the bottles....they were kept frozen and the bottle was then held cradled in the arm from the mid-palm region to the elbow region...kind of like a football. Then they would strike the long edge of the bottle with a sword and slice of the top........only a few people can still do it well, here in the U.S., but I'm sure Mr. G. can give a better explanation of what actually occurs. I've seen it done once while I vacationed in Napa Valley.......I'd like to hear other stories about it and maybe it's history...........

Mr G.

I am very intrigued by this place. But, one thing you need to remember, I am on a Parts Managers salary!!! This place looks beautiful.

As well, can you re-explain the bottle of Kristal story?

BTW-I did find a little chalet near by that is more in my budget. Thanks for the help!

Hotel Regina Wengen. Mention my name. The most beautifull skiing in the world. Take the train to the top of the Eiger. Take the tram to the Shiltorn. Remember they dress for dinner. They put the Krystal in the freezer, run a sword up the neck and slice the bottle open. Very Nice.

I tried boarding for an hour and a half. IU have the same size feet as my friend who i go with, so we trade. Boarding isnt that hard. I could turn and change fron edge to edge most of the time without falling down within half an hour. I just cant go down anything but a green circle if i want to stay alive. After a half hour i got a false sense of cinfidence. All it took was catching a heel edge at probably 20mph to bring my confidence right back to where it should be.
This winter i'll try to get better at it. Cant wait to go to VT in mid december because im guessing it wont be too crowded, or at least not as crowded as it is between christmas and new years!

I was a skier for 15 years, but for the last 8 yrs I've been boarding.....totally hooked, I'm jealous!

One for Ice in the morning, and one for slush in the afternoon. Man i miss them days 100 + days on the slopes every winter, whatever possesed myself to move to AZ??? Oh yeah money!!!

Let me know when your spring break is. If it matches mine i would be willing to head up there also. I was up there last X-Mas break and i have but one word to describe it!!! AWESOME!!!!!!!!

If summit county does not have any snow Tahoe is my next choice.

The area you're look at Wengen/Grindlewald (sp?) are both nice resorts. Fairly intermediate/advanced - not much in the ridiculous category. If you want something with more appeal to the advanced skier/boarder I can recommend Verbier or Zermatt.

http://www.verbier.ch/flash/en/index.cfm
http://www.zermatt.ch/index.e.html

There are lots of smaller resorts in Switzerland which are fun, but German or French becomes an asset in these resorts - if you stick to the major ones you'll get away with English.

Tim, thats hilarious, I grew up "skiing" in CT or rather ice skating down mountains LOL. When I moved to Tahoe there would be perfect snow a tiny bit crunchy & people would say it was icy!!!! I would just laugh remembering skiing down clear ice where you could see the grass underneath

I suppose i should get out west to go skiing this winter or next. There are alot of good package deals w/airfare to be had. I challenge any person who has only skied out west and thinks they are "good" to come to the northeast. Skiing here might be more challenging because of all the damn ice!! you guys are lucky with your constant supply of fresh powder that you take for granted. Even after a big snowfall here, the fresh powder is chewed up by days end.

I ski'd at Courmayeur in Italy back in Jan. Its on the Italian side of Mt Blanc , the hot chocolate alone was worth the trip :-) Yum, you have to fly into Milan & rent a car. The Mt is a little small by US standards but there is some good skiing to be had.

Havent been skiing in Switzerland. Ive heard great things about St Anton. not sure if that is in Switzerland or Austria though. I hope you like chocolate cus its awesome there

I am trying to plan a trip to Europe in Feb of next year. I would like to go into Switzerland since the Franc to the dollar ratio is in our favor.

Does anyone have any advice on where to board? I have been looking at staying in Interlaken and boarding the Jungfrau Region. Any thoughts?

I am a int-advance rider and will be spending the rest of Cali. season at Heavenly with my season pass.

Thanks!
