Slap me if I'm wrong, but is that from the SNL skit where John Belushi drinks the Lake Michigan beer? |

Hey Darth - let me know where you work. I'll cruise by there someday and you can take me out to lunch. I really like filet mignon, chilean sea bass, and The Macallan 18. Thanks! |

Art - I do agree that unions are useful, but I think that they have become too useful. Example: coal miners striking in the early 70's really did well for themselves, and rightfully so. The coal companies were treating them like sh!t. The same is true of auto workers in the 30's and 40's. The unions, I feel, should be there solely for the purpose of keeping the employment fair. Making employees pay for a portion of their healthcare, which is what probably 90% of people in this country have to do, is totally fair. I think it is unfair of the unions to strike in order to keep their members from having to pay a measly $20/month or $60/month for health care. Are unions needed? Sure, but not the ruthless unions of today. All they end up doing is getting blue-collar people white-collar wages, which increases the cost of goods and services. Regardless of your political orientation, there is no justification for paying a check-out worker the same wages as a high-school teacher, research scientist, or police officer. Just no justification what-so-ever. |

Unions are absolutely necesary in today's world. Laborers would not get adequate pay without them. It balances the bargaining power. I do have disagreements over the work rules that Unions sometimes attempt to impose, but as to negotiating for wages, in some industries, the workers would be improvished without them. Art |

Darth - there is a sign in front of the driver that reads: "Unneccesary conversation with the driver is against the law." Therefore, asking him/her to honk could put me in jail. But thanks for the sentiment! And I agree, be a dude and loan me the 550! And the mighty X 1/9 is underconstruction. I'm milling the head and putting in a custom exhaust, as well as trying to dump about 400lbs from the pig. In other words, it's collecting dust in my front yard! |

Harass them right back, Nebs. Unions have outlived their usefulness, IMO. In this economy, unions go on strike at their own long-term peril. As the facts show, with continually declining union memberships. |

Being in the healthcare business (insurance), i can say that their ire is justified... Commercial health insurance (in NY) is community rated and things are different from state to state, but i can imagine that California's premiums are somewhat similar... We have one client who's needed service areas opened in California when they opened offices out there and the rates were very close to what they are here... Some of the rates in Texas are unreal while some of the rates in Pennsylvania are dreamy... Lastly, if you've ever worked in a grocery store, then you know that $5 to $15 dollars makes a difference... They have a right to be angry... at least in my opinion. |

Jeeze... If I try to buy food, I get harrassed by grocery store employees. This irritates the crap out of me because what they are striking over, in my opinion, is CRAP. They are being asked to pay $5/week (single) or $15/week (married) for health insurance. Currently, they pay nothing. Irritating as hell. Can't buy food without harrassment. Now, the damn MTA has gone on strike. In order for me to get to school each day, I have to: 1. Ride the MetroLink train @ 5:36am to Union Station 2. Take the Red Line to Wilshire/Western 3. Take the MTA Rapid Bus to Wilshire/Westwood 4. Arrive @ UCLA at 8:00am. 2 1/2 hours, most of it on MTA buses and subways. Now, they are on strike, for reasons I am unsure of (health care, I think), and I no longer have a ride to school. Arrrgh! |
