Dave: Parrot sketch:"Beautiful plumage, the Norwegian Blue". Holy Grail: "You mean an African or European swallow?" (What do you expect from someone at toosilly.com?) (Whenever I catch Inuyasha (anime) on Adult Swim, and hear them talking about "magic swords" or "sacred arrows", I always remember "Bring forth the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch.") (Programming alert: Monday they start running FLCL again.) |

I've had a Grey for 16 yuears. female I think she was a plucker for about a year. We tried everything nothing worked. Then for no apparent reason she slowed down then stopped. She plucks occasionally now but nothing unsightly. Smart birds other then that. |

Darth - I had a horrible time yesterday looking for a damn place to park. I was feeling quite blue, and really could have used that wave to cheer me up. |

Okay, someone has to say it: Take British rail to Notlob and trade it on a Norwegian Blue.

My Grey used to pull all of her tail feathers until I got another parrot. Although they can't stand each other it seems the presence of another bird in the room helps. Both can see out and they have music all day. One thing that seems to help my birds is taking them out of the cage when I get home and placing them on free perches while I mess around the house. They get to ride on my shoulder on occasion and enjoy 'testing' the foods I make for dinner. Being included in the evening activities seems to make them more willing to go back to their cages later on. Although my Grey is typically neurotic she isn't as bad as some. Not having anyone in the house arguing makes a huge difference in the psycological health of the little critters too. DJ |

Not sure how to stop it, but my uncle had one that picked himself just about clean when he and wife were fighting and in process of divorce. It eventually died....from stress???? |

Have you tried toolady.com it is very informative and there is a specified area under bird chat boards for each bird species. My g/f goes there for info on our macaw and everyone there is very helpful. Make sure your bird has a lot of toys, etc. something challenging. i.e., leave treats in an egg carton etc. There is also a book my g/f got she said might be good for you, "A Practical Parrot Guide Parrot-Toys & Play Areas" by Carol S. D'Arezzo, Lauren Shannon-Nunn

Darth, I've got two cockatoos. Onw is happy, the other picks at her feathers. I can tell you that birds like to be in large flocks (they feel safe and happy). When they are left alone they are lonely and sad. Then the self mutilation starts. Try to make the bird a part of your family (the flock) keep it interested, then it will be happy and hopefully stop the feather picking. good luck. Bob |

Did all that. I leave the radio on for him when I go. He now imitates Howard Stern! rotate toys, better diet, he looks out the window all day...I'm really stumped. DL |

DL, in Greys, feather plucking and self mutilation is a typical sign of stress or boredom. The stress factor is often brought on by a sudden change in its environment. Have you tried hanging his cage near a window? This can provide him with a view to keep him entertained as well as stable, unchanging surroundings. |

Does anyone here have any experience with African Greys? Mine seems to have some problems leaving himself alone. He has destroyed his own plume/coat several times. I have tried everything. Anyone? Anyone? DL |
