Did anyone go to see the biggest regatta in the country? I didnt take my own pics, and my friends didnt send me the ones they took yet, so i found some online of saturday's racing, as its still too early for sunday's to be up. The first pic is of the starting line during the club 8+ event, taken from the BU bridge. The 2nd is one from the club single event, which i think is cool beause it shows 2 bridges, im not sure which ones though, maybe river st. and western ave?. These pics dont really give you an idea of all the people that are there. For most of the events. notably the mens & womens championship 8+ event and to a lesser extent the colligiate 8+ event on sunday, both sides of the 5 bridges are packed, and 1.5 miles of shorline in the 3.2 mile long race were also packed. The mens champ 8+ was THE event to watch though, with the Princeton Training center winning it (this is where the US Ntn'l team trains), with harvard, princeton, and cambridge finishing stong in the top 10. but man whenever you see those national team colored oars, you know that you are watching a good crew. the thing that amazes me is how fast these guys, all the champ 8+'s, go and how relaxed they look rowing the course at 36 stroked per minute! (to put it in perspective, our start was at a 36, then we settled to a 30/31 for the whole race and then started our sprint with 500 meters to go at a 34/34.5.) the most amazing part of it is how relaxed they look, yet they give every stroke everything they have. You would never guess that they are experiencing some of the worst pain in their lives just by watching them. They make it look so effortless and easy, like the technique just comes naturally. their boat is just set like a rock, not leaning to either side, and they all catch together and BOOM, they are gone, putting some major bend in the oar every stroke for 3.2 miles.
thanks to row2k.com for the pics. I'll post some that my friends took when i get them.
