The thing about the 20 inch is that it isn't high definition. The g5 is bad ass

L., nice setup. How do you like the 23 inch screen? I've heard some people say the 20 inch is brighter, but I love the size of the 23.

Chris, if they introduce a 30 inch screen that would be great.

I use an old 'n slow HP laptop.

Well, not that old...about a year. But I'm using an Athlon 1600XP (good unit) with 256 SDRAM (CRAP!), and NO VIDEO CARD.

It works well, but there aren't any new games I can play on it. :-(

Tim,

you can never have too much RAM. The more you have the faster your computer will run.

I have a gateway 700x series. I got it last year about this time, it has a 2.53GHz p4, and all that other good stuff. The only problem is i think i shoud upgrade the RAM. 512mb is enough, but it couldnt hurt to have more i guess. the thing i like most about my computer is not the computer itself, but the monitor. i have an 18" LCD flat panel, and it saves so much space on my desk. I have had no problems withit except the keyboard got messed up and gateway sent the replacement, which i didnt get for some reason, so they are sending me another one.
mac's do seem easier to use, almost too easy. I get along fine with my gateway though.

Hey Ben, when I got rid of most of my SGI stuff, I sold a bunch of Onyx units just like those on ebay.
I kept 1 O2, and one 16mm film camera just as decorations in my studio.
I can tell you, I don't miss having a machine room, or having to telecine 35mm film.

Interesting
I am kind of Surprised at the Mac usage rate by the way Microsquish says things are all going their way. I LOVE my MAC and would not want to go back again.
Started out on a Timex Sinclair and Vic 20 many PC'c but first MAC was a IIcx always liked it.
I worked for a newspaper where we did everyting on 5 1/2 in floppy on a Linotype dummy term. Went back to PC and MAC and then ended up on a Unix box. Now back in Mac and could not imagine trying to do publishing eleswhere

Ben;

That is a great use of FEA. Perhaps i should model something like that in one of my engineering classes!!!!

Rob Guess "The Other Rob"

As for my computers they are all custom made by myself. Current system Intel P4 3Ghz 2GB ram 80GB hard drive, Windows XP Pro.

Used mainly for CAD, FEA, CFD and F-Chat

I am yet to find a computer that I can't crash within the first 10 minutes of me using it. MAC's generally don't like me and after living with MAC's my whole life, I switched over to PC's in highschool and just totaled by 3rd PC; a Sager laptop.

I go through computers faster then Darryl Strawberry goes through crack :-).

Actually, this is the best-ever use of FEA I have encountered. Move over space-shuttle, we put all our resources to bear on what REALLY matters!

Chris- I just have it because the chicks dig it :-)

Seriously, it does come in quite handy for many things I do. It's retarted-fast at Maya renderings (with so many CPUs) and does a pretty good job on FEA simulations.

It does need 220v30A, though nothing fancy like 3phase. It requires some A/C to keep it cool, and is designed for a raised-floor datacenter (with cable entry on the bottom of the unit, designed to go under the floor.) But other than being a little loud, you could have one in your beadroom (I had it's 3' tall 'desk-side' cousin in my beadroom for a year.)

The huge I/O of the system and fast graphics pipe also enable some effects in realtime in PIRANHA, a visual-effects suite that runs on the machine.

Here's an example of FEA on a piston. The areas of color indicate increasing stress, you can use this to fine-tune a part in the computer. Remove metal where it's not nessicary, and add it where it is!

Damn Ben! (Are you sure you didn't buy the computer room set off of the Solaris producers!? Do you have that room cooled to subzero temperatures? Are you experimenting with cracking the .1 micron barrier for silicon etching? Working with DNA and quantum computers yet!?) :-)

Seriously - very impressive!

2. Main work computer - Windows 2003 Small Business Server beta (for now)
3. File Server - Red Hat 6.2
4. Test Computer - currently Windows 2000 Server

At the time Microsoft bought 250 mil of Apple stock, Apple had 1.2 bil cash on hand. The big thing was an agreement with Gates to update Office for the Mac. Without Apple Microsoft would never had gone past the DOS stage, because there would not had been any reason to spend the money on R&D

I guess that's why Apple's biggest competitor, Microsoft, had to pump money into them in order to keep them afloat.

I must say that PC'S are very good for the employment rate in the US, case in point the school district my wife teaches in, switched to PC'S last year. With Macs they had 2 part time tech people for the entire district, with the PC'S they have 2 FULL time tech people per building!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Currently waiting on the new Powerbooks to come out.

I get a big kick out of watching the PC world crumble under the weight of MS and their Siht systems. Now I find this one.....

Monthly alerts from Microsoft about Windoes flaws???

I'm an OS slut.

I've got WindowsXP on most of my desktops. BSD/Solaris/Windows mix on the servers we administer. And every so often I get the pleasure of supporting a mac user.

IMO Anymore there are no bad Operating Systems. Just bad administrators. From the 350lb UNIX control freak who is reading your mail to the spikey haired MCSE who can't right click.

VIVA LA OS/2!

I've used PC's quite a bit over the years for different apps through work and friends, so I feel confident saying that I MUCH prefer Macs, especially since OS X and Jaguar came on the scene. I subscribe to MacAddict and have a G3 tower and a G4 Powerbook. Am planning to upgrade later to the G5 dual with a cinema screen (I hear a 30" is coming soon).

Everyone I know on the creative side of things use Macs. The iLife system easily integrates your digital photos, music library, editing and DVD burning. iSight is the next wave in Video conferencing. Their Safari web-browser is really impresive. Entourage, iCal, and the Mac Address Book all integrate with everything as well - they make all the software SO easy and it all works together to completely organize your life in an intuitive, efficient, and aesthetically pleasing way. The G5 just set the bar for the rest of the world. I'm not as knowledgable regarding PC's, but from discussions with others, they always seem to be following Mac's interface and lead. Still, we're only 5% of the market or less, so thank God for Pixar and iPods keeping Apple's coffer's full.

I also do a lot of video editing, and in talking to PC/Avid users, they all have a lot of gripes and really seem intrigued by Macs and FCP (which is awesome). Again, as Bob said, it REALLY helps when they make BOTH the software and the hardware for seamless integration and very few troubles. Macs just keep getting better and better!

Just wondering what we are dealing with here I have been on Mac for years but have had been forced into Microsoft and even UNIX and other platforms over my many carrears.
So here on the Big F Chat board the question is What's under the hood.
for me G4 (office) G4 at home and looking to add new laptop to the mix.
