I took the extinguisher in and the folks can't recharge it because it has a plastic nozzle - this I understand, since the toxic contents are under pressure and the canister is old. Any thoughtw with regards to the Halon 1311 or the Halon-replacement mixes sold by AMAREX?

Halon is fine, getting it recharged should be no problem. Here in Seattle, all the major fire extingisher shops have Halon. I think you cannot have too many flashlights or fire extinguishers around....I have one 2.5 lb one in the passenger compartment, and a 3 lb one in the trunk. I keep two 40bc dry chem units in the trunk of my Bimmer, and two in my garage as well.

The only draw back to Halon is the great possibilty of a reflash. If you dump one extinguisher on the fire and you have a reflash then what do you do?? Best of to carry a large bottle or better yet two extinguishers.

Try this web site: Halon

Halon works well for a car fire application, but can be more difficult to find sources. I just look in the phone book Yellow Pages, and call the fire extinguisher places. I'm sure a few of them will be able to recharge it in your area.

As far as installation, I have a built-in Halon system in my Miura, and in my Ferrari I made a bracket that is mounted in front of the passenger seat rails. Access works out well.

Can't help with part replacements but I can vouch for Halon suppression simply because it will not leave any corrosive residue after discharge.

I just inherited a Halon 1211 fire extinguisher. The unit has a plastic nozzle/head, and will need some charging - the unit's gauge indicator is off-center. Can anyone tell me where I can get a fresh top-off, and whether this unit is preferable to preventing the dreaded 'car fire'?
