Renna was to be married to his g/f in 4 weeks. They moved into a house together next to my co-worker's parents and were excited that their life together was starting to unfold. Terrible tragedy.. RIP.

Jack, amen. That's the only time the Washington Post gives racing any coverage.

Terribly sad.

The cars are travelling way beyond aircraft take off speed on some of the super ovals.... and the moment the front wing comes off or is damaged OR wheels touch the car does a wheelie and just takes off....
I remember watching live footage of Jeff Krosnoff die racing Indy in Toronto back in (96?) live and thinking that they MUST find a way to keeping the cars from quite literally flying in the event of a high speed front wing failure or collision......
I think Indy/IRL is now the most dangerous motor racing formula in the wold today.

That's tragic. Of course, why else would SI cover it?

Rob;

I think the root of the problem seems to be when the cars are pitched up in the front the air gets up under then and away they go. I am not sure it it is a fundmental car design flaw or that the car is so aerodynamic that they run very little wing angle of attack at the front the once the car pitches up it acts as an lift device instead of a downforce device....

Just my 2 cents worth.

Mario hit a solid peice of the wreckage of another car that launched him. Sad to hear the loss of a driver.

I was wondering if all the airborne cars is lack of downforce? Don't laugh at me, it wasn't meant to be funny. If the rest of car has advanced to the point they can take downforce off the aero package and still handle the corners, then maybe on the straights the car wants to fly.

There were no other cars on the track, so you can't blame it on being in the draft and having no air.

Is the Indy track bumpy? Not the same place Mario took flight.

He died doing what he loved and is circling 'round the great track in the sky.
To echo (Beast) - Too many airborne chances for this to happen though.

I just started racing karts. My 100cc Yamaha gives me all of the speed (and then some) that I think I will ever need in life. I do not understand the mindset of guys that like going 200+ and honestly, do don't feel much for accidents that result in deaths of this sort. In the closet, I kinda wish I had the balls to do what they do.

I have said it once and i will say it again. IRL has a big problem, the cars become airborn with ease.

They need to find a solution as to why ASAP before anyone else gets hurt or killed. Fortunatly this was not at a race, since the car went through the fence and into the stands.
