I have to agree with the idea of getting a used car...minimal depreciation forthcoming.

Hold off for the Elise, it's gonna be a great car, Toyota engine and drivetrain, so maintenance shouldn't be a problem.

If you wanna stay in the cheep zone, I would suggest getting a Subaru WRX Sti. That car is mad quick, and can be made even quicker.

Have you considered the new E55. Now that is a car that has BALLS. Matter of fact any of the new AMG's are pretty menacing.

Amir, you are so right. I'm falling for the Elise, trying hard to think of other cars, but its just so enticing..

James, what is your primary req? Performance? Luxury? Price? You have to give up something. That would help you narrow the choices.

my.02???? a RAM AIR 6 SPEED TRANS AM. color choice would be black for resale but that is in the eye of the beholder i guess.i have been messing with " F-BODIES" as they are called for a long time. i absolutely believe that one of theses is a sleeper investment car.... and GM has stopped making them!!!!!! good looks and performance, reasonable room and safety features. before i get any hate mail, all i can say is DRIVE ONE. even with the automatics they are great, but make sure it has the WS6 suspension/ram air package!!!!! i know its a car that is " beneath" the others on your list but i feel they are going to be valueable in the future.

A BMW M5 makes one of the best daily drivers and is still faster and handles better than most sports cars. It holds its value very well too . Plus, it can carry five adults in luxury. I have 68k miles on mine and plan to keep it for at least another 75k miles or so.

good resale =/= mitsubishi

i think the best bang for buck right now is a used 996. you might pay a bit more in insurance but as long as you're patient and get a good deal, you'll make up for it on resale. i am surprised that insurance for a 996 was that bad... the m3 definitely is way up on the "risk" profile (at least with my ins company).

good luck!

James..."$800-$1200/month for a car and insurance is worth it"...If you are makig $200K+/Yr, that would seem OK. If you have that kind of money to justify for a car & insurance payment, you should be buying more property and buy a used Miata.

Hold out for the Elise. Best value in new sports cars. I spent this summer getting rides in one - you cannot beat this car.

Edit: It's so much fun that after a day of driving, when we got home, we went to the nearby park, did some donuts, went up to an empty parking lot, did some moves, zipped up a nearby street, down the other side, up a hill, down to the ocean on the other side, etc. etc. You just do not want to put this car away.

Originally my wife wanted a mid to late 90s Viper and then a Porsche C2 a couple of years old. Then we test drove a 2 year old M5 and were impressed but figured an M3 would be better/more fun. Now we are looking at the monthly cost and wondering if $800-$1200/month for a car and insurance is worth it. Started looking at the Lancer Evolution to keep costs down. So now I'm freaking out trying to find a car that

1) won't break the bank - would like to keep total cost under $800/month but could do $1000/month (trying to pay our house off by next year and this impacts that goal)
2) find a car that will retain its value the most; the prospect of spending $50k or so and losing $30k or more in a few years is not my cup of tea - I be a cheap bastard. Any suggestions on a car that will hold value (that was the appeal of a late 90s Viper) compared to other models?
3) decent insurance rates - I was amazed that either a 2002 M3 or '99 C2 would cost more to insure than both my '94 Saturn and '78 308GTB.
4) is fun to drive - handling and acceleration - I personally could wait for an Elise but the spousal unit is antsy
