Panama is one of the the saving graces of the 1984 album - awesome drum track.

Also, don't forget that Diver Down was some kind of contractual requirement situation (so I've heard) - no one wanted to do it, it was just a throw away of filler to meet some obligation they had (barely 30 minutes of music) - although I think that their cover of the Kinks' "Where Have all the Good Times Gone" is great.

They did have a few great songs with Hagar..Don't forget Diver Down, was one of there worst that was with Roth. Thier Live show improved greatly with Hagar..although the key board stuff did get in the way,but ya gotta remember Ed was and is a very talented piano player,so it was only natural for him to use it in their songs. I for one like both Roth and Hagar the same..I think the song writing was much better with Sammy...and the guitar work was excellent.

VH1 was a bench mark album,,it changed they way rock guitar was played..but you could never repeat it..because it had already been done...by Ed! They only left to do was to expand the bands horizons by useing different things, and writing different songs. I'm sure if VH2 and the rest of the albums sounded like VH1, the band would not have gone very far.

Jump Back
whats that sound?
Here she comes full blast and top down
Hot shoe

Model citizen

Don't cha know she com'in home to me?
You'll loser in that turn

Panama!
Panama oh oh ah oh!!

your right thomas, Slash was a HUGE factor of GNR. My favorite songs by GNR are ones with awesome guitar solos. So, to me, Slash was a bigger part of GNR than Axl.

Change of Topic.

Whats Slash doin these days? lol

Tom,

Ever since Diamond Dave was given his walking papers, it's never been the same. Have they ever put out an album as end-to-end awesome as VH1? I sure don't think so.

Mr.C,

If you love Neil Peart, make sure you get his DVD "A Work in Progress" (you may already have it of course) - it is unfreakingbelievable.

You hate to admit it, but most bands are that way. Young, hungry, drugged up and angry, they produced some wicked music. Just like the classic tormented artists. Fast forward to when they're sober, richer than s**t, health-conscious, probably seeing a regular therapist, etc., and all of a sudden they've lost their edge. I quit listening to VH after they split with Roth. All that keyboard crap was too much.

Eddie Van Halen should go back to drinking...He made his best music while he was smashed. The last album thay did(VH3) was really bad(although there were a couple of good tunes on it) He said he wrote that entire album sober. If thats what he comes up with sober..then go back to the old way!! I'm waiting for him to come out with a sole guitar album..I think it would be quite good, but appaerntly he has become a bit of a hermit, never going out and just kind of lazing around, ever since his wife left him.

Marcus, that could be a pretty cool band to check out. Scott Weiland is sorta like Eddie Van Halen: every time he surfaced, he just got finished getting sober again.

Sorry that I am late to come in....but Slash the lead guitarist for GNR is now in a band called Velvet Revolver. Front man Scott Weiland from Stone temple Pilots has recently joined. They did a song on the Hulk soundtrack. Duff as some of you know was the bassist for GNR and now has joined this new band. I read an article in Guitar magazine just a week ago about Velvet Revolver. Supposedly Weiland is cleaned up, so they say.

Obviously my knowledge of 80's bands isn't too good - and I am proud of that :-)

Anyone remember the short lived (I think) band called Bonham with the son of the LedZep guy? Remember that song "The disregard of timekeeping" LOL

I used to love that song, and I just remembered it so I downloaded it and I couldn't believe how bad it is, in retrospect.

"sampled music": adjective/noun. Term used to described music recorded by unintelligent people who thrive and profit by stealing the musical ideas and recordings of real musicians with real talent. Usually done at the insistance of new era management at recording companies who have lost all integrity and concentrate solely on the bottom line profit figure.

Anything by Destiny's Child turns my stomach into a knot. I would rather rip off my ears, and poke hot needles in my eyes then have to listen to that..that..crap!! Were has all the real music gone to? Does nobody write and perform their own music anymore? I'm so sick of all this sampled music.

Gary,

Perhaps I jumped the gun.....actually no I didn't you bag. Even though "ask one of the chosen people" is a retarded thing to say, maybe it isn't anti-Semitic. I don't know - but since I dislike political correctness, let's forget about that.

HOWEVER,

You ARE Tony Pantera Roberts and probably that Michal Ziggy Rossi guy too and you have posted many offensive things about everyone, not just Jews. Perhaps I was wrong on this count, but I still know you for what you are. I think I may have just "profiled" you in my earlier post.

You're not just a dumbass (which is not your fault), but an ignorant dumbass, which actually is your fault.

Golly Mr Green, I thought Axl was your Asst. Manager at Dunkin' Donuts.

I saw G'n'R at Texas stadium back in 1988. They sounded piss poor live & the band was late getting on stage. To top it off, they had smoke machines on stage that looked more like a some sort of cook out or BBQ that went horribly wrong.

Gary - I knew you had a lot of issues (witness the condom fiasco over the weekend), but I didn't know you had issues with Jews. You're no longer funny you dingbat.

Rest - sorry about implanting the synth intro to The Final Countdown in your heads, but I wasn't going to suffer alone :-) (you know there are still people that will raise their lighters in the air at the first note of that ditty - the same people that think "Eye of the Tiger" is a kick-a$$ rock song)

When G'n'R first hit they were the opening act for The Cult on a North American tour. I had the fortune of not only seeing them pre fame in concert working it like their lives depenede on it but because i was there covering it for a newspaper i got to hang out with Slash and Axel for a little while. They were just on the cusp of really exploding and you could tell from the way they carried themselves that they were something special.
Raw unrefined talent at that point.
it was great watching them make the climb so fast and sad to see what became of them as things distructed. To this day Jungle and others still rank on my fav driving music and even if most women i have dated HATE them I have always kept the CD's close.

Man, there really was some crap music back then. I wonder if we'll look around in 10 years and find the same thing to be true about top 40 music today. I can honestly say that I haven't been very moved by any new music for several years.

For those who remember the dark days of the mid-80s as far as rock and hard rock were concerned, GnR's "Appetite for Destruction" saved us from the likes of Winger, Warrant, White Lion etc. - all that horrible, horrible stuff. (Three words for those that didnt think it was so bad: The Final Countdown).

Even though "Sweet Child O' Mine" didn't break until around 15 months after the album's release, it was like a rescue line to rock fans that had no new music to go and buy. "Appetite" was an aggressive, angry, instant rock classic.

Then, the inevitable happened, and they got bloated, pretentious and took themselves too seriously. Izzy left before the carnage, Adler got booted and Axl kept beating people up and blaming it on his manic depression and refusal to take his lithium.

The two "Use Your Illusion" albums had some brilliant moments (e.g. "Estranged", "Don't Cry") but there was so much crap on there that you knew they were just screwing around in the studio, enjoying the unlimited budget. If they had had the discipline to cull the crap and put out one 16 track album from those sessions it would have been another instant classic.

I have one of their concerts on beta hi-fi (yes beta!) from '87 in NYC and it is pure high-energy kick a$$ rock n roll. By contrast, the Illusions tour was just a mess - 20 people on stage, flutes, horns, synthesizers, endless costume changes for Axl etc....not a dignified way to end.

All these years later, Axl has the awful hair extensions, his guitar player is some guy that wears a bucket on his head and yet another tour gets cancelled due to his instability. Oh yeah don't forget he got busted for trying to take a loaded handgun onto a plane (in Phoenix I think).

Slash (the post-Page master of the Les Paul) tried the Snake Pit thing, and I think everyone else has dispersed.

They were awesome at one time and they had their moment but sadly Axl blew it and it's too late now. Maybe one day, there will be a KISS or Eagles style "take the money and run" reunion tour but nothing new and good is going to come out of that camp. There will of course be the inevitable Greatest Hits album in time for an upcoming Christmas season. Maybe with a couple of new songs or covers (a la Sheryl Crow) but still, it will be the product of the label's marketing department, not the band.

Sorry for the babbling - I saw the comments and immediately remembered what "Appetite" meant to me at the time.

At this time I have no comment on Def Leppard or our pal Gary Green :-)

P.S. Nibs - I'm glad your house is safe. I saw the situation on the news - truly terrifying.

Not that Def Leppard is one of my favorites, but since you mentioned them, I used them as a basis for comparison. I think we should just agree to disagree on the talent level of Axl Rose. I will, however, agree that the rest of GNR were talented musicians.
Greenie: you are a little insignificant piece of s*it. What are you driving? A Yugo? Why don't you borrow the keys to your dad's K-car and get your ass out of that trailer for a while. FYI: As if it is any of your business...I could easily buy a 355 or TR tomorrow if I wanted to. As a parting thought...I, my friend am a winner, you, are a loser and you will ALWAYS BE a loser. Go bug some people on trailerchat.com. I hear there's a new double wide out that could accomodate your entire clan under one roof. But remember....NO MORE INBREEDING!!!

DL -

Thanks for asking. :-)

No, I didn't see you and the bird eating your crumpets this morning, as I got to school via the 405 north. Didn't touch Wilshire, unfortunately.

As far as I know, everything is OK. My g/f was forced to evacuate again last night, but I think it was simple precaution.

I think we're OK, as the worst of the fire has passed.

Jerry -

If you think that Def Leppard had ANY talent, well, I guess it's useless for me to try and argue.

Jerry,

I'd rather been a has been like Axl and live in Santa Monica and drive a Murcielago than a Jerry
who lives in Muskegon and drives a 25 year old 308.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but in my opinion, had a few hits, ya, I'll agree, but they had nowhere NEAR the talent of Def Leppard. Who's still going and who isn't? Axl is a 100% has been, and a marginally never was.

Even if they do release something soon, do you
think it is going to be good as the material
that was released in their prime ???

Anything even close ? Perhaps it may just be
something thrown together to get their manager
off their back and pay a few petty bills.

Don't hold your breath for something of hi- quality
that you expect.

Blows most of his cash? What did he do, buy Uzbekistan?

As far as I know, the dude is beyond loaded. He probably could wipe his a$$ with $100 bills for the rest of his life and he wouldn't see a dent in his bank account.

And marginal talent? Sh!t, GnR put out some great stuff. They pulled rock 'n roll out of the Glam slump that Def Leppard and Motley Crue stomped it into. Without GnR, we all might still be listening to Dokken and Stryper! :-)

A dou che bag in this instance is someone who has marginal talent (at best), blows most of his wealth and is arrogant and inconsiderate to the point of not worrying whether or not other people are affected by his childish and immature actions.

Adam, I figured it was just one of those MTV things. Doesn't really serve much purpose other than to entertain the viewer for 45 seconds. After all, that's pretty much been their M/O for the last 20 years!

Jack,

Were they just poking fun at GNR and nothing else? I didn't think it was an advertisment. Wish they'd show it again!

I'm not sure what a dou che bag is, but Axl Rose has made some fantastic music. When he finally gets around to releasing the latest 'GnR' album he may or may not have made some more...Unlikely, I'd say, as I always thought Slash's guitar was a huge factor.

I was watching MTV/VH1 a few days ago and they had a little skit with two kittens - one dressed as Axl and one as Slash doing 'Welcome to Jungle' - laughed my butt off!

I think he suffers from a slight "center of the universe" disorder, Rob. Unfortunately, for many celebrities and self-important rags-to-riches bozos like Axl, the only cure is some sort of life altering crisis. Then we get to hear about how they now know what's really important in life.

He hangs out in Santa Monica and drives a Murcielago. He is an avid watch collector and smokes cubans all the time. Last time I talked to him, he was thinking about opening a Brazillian restaurant. Nice guy!

Supposedly, has been trying to stage a "comeback" this past year. But,was up to his former, usual B.S. and cancelling shows last minute. Saying things like "He just didn't feel ready" or "up to it". Too bad.I always liked his music, but too many of these guys hit it big...hit the Lotto,so to speak, and it goes to their head, and they think that they're "primadonna's" or something. Maybe, when he gets tired of washing dishes for a living, and realizing that his sh*t DOES stink,he'll realize what he had and grow up. Personally,I've heard enough of this rap crap, and would like to see MTV and top 40 radio return to a Rock,Rock and Roll, and Hard Rock format.(Hey,I listened to music since the '60's,when Rock and Roll ruled the Earth. What can I say?)

He had a "comeback" on MTV music awards two years ago. Well, at the time he said they were getting back together and would be playing shows, nothing ever came of it. He was out of shape, sang terrible, and I think he has a few mental issues too.
