If you're at work, you're probably on a firewalled network. You might need to check your proxy settings, in order to use the company proxies to get out past the firewall. If your proxy settings are off, then you're trying to look up outside addresses on the internal DNS servers (which probably don't have those references). If your error messages are coming from the proxy server, then it's probably the outside DNS server that your proxy server is using that is not healthy. (E.g., your company's ISP's DNS server.) |

If it doesn't work out I can try giving you the IP's of a few DNS servers to test out. |

Yeah, the DNS settings are probably coming from your DHCP server if it's a work computer. The DNS server is the one that needs to be checked, not your machine. |

Your DNS server at work might be gettting sick have you talked to your IT people yet? Maybe they are starting to block those sites? Just a guess right now. Is anyone else having any problems accessing websites? |

Is this computer part of a network or a home pc? If it is a home pc did you just switch ISP's? |

It's wierd.....I rebooted and I was able to access a few sites that I couldn't access 1/2 hour ago.....but now 1/2 hour later, I am getting the same message I got beforehand and again I can't access them..........I hate computer problems, especially "intermittant" ones..I did a search for "host" like Nick advised, and it came up blank............I also ran a Norton Corporate edition, to no avail.......I'm kind of stumped what to do next.......I figure I'll shut down in 45 minutes and maybe tomorrow when I fire back up the system will "reconfigure"......... |

There was a javascript virus recently (IE Exploit) that would create a 'hosts' file that redirected the IP for a lot of common sites by for DNS DOS attack purposes. Do a search for the file 'host' or hosts' and open it with notepad or wordpad. Just a possibilty since I know people who have inadvertantly got it and been able to get to some, and not other sites. If the file looks like: google.com 80.31.123.3 yahoo.com 80.31.123.3 etc.. just delete it! |

Faisal, that makes sense....I haven't ever changed anything or done anything differently......could the mappings have "changed themselves" or could I have inadvertantly done it? Is this a quick fix.....I'm on the computer at work.........am I S.O.L? |

Since you can access f-chat, your IP and router settings are ok. So I am guessing your DNS settings need to be changed. The DNS server you are using has the wrong mappings (of domain name to IP address) for the sites you are unable to access. |

I am trying to access a couple internet sites that I've been on many times...i.e. thesmokinggun.com and such. I always am able to access them right away, but today I keep getting a URL error, cache unable to recognize path/url please check that address is typed correctly...this has happened to about 5 sites, that I'm sure are correct......any suggestions. Thanks |
