Here's one more. The back area of the ship that has all the flags around it had picnic tables in it and there were guys drinking alcohol around there. The other interesting thing is they seem pretty relaxed about uniforms. A lot of the guys spoke English and they seemed pretty friendly. It's a shame they don't stop by more often.

Many years ago when I was in the Navy we stopped in Massaua, Ehiopia for Ethiopian Sea Dog Days, hosted by Haille Selassi (SP?). There were ships from the US (USS Wainwright DLG 28), a French ship, English, Iranian, Turkish, and a Russian destroyer. Oh, also the entire Ethiopian Navy consisting of one old WW2 destroyer and two old PT boats. We had olympic style sporting events over three days between the crews of the ships. As usual, the Ethiopians won the marathon by a large margin (two olympic runners) and the Russians won most of the power events. (Several olympic athletes as crew members). The US won most of the field events even though we had no olympic athletes on board. Several members had competed in college though. Funny incident. Our shot putter was asked to throw the javelin also. He had never done it before and had about two months to practice before going there but we were in the Gulf of Tonkin most of that time so he actually was going to participate cold turkey. He had acquired some old javelin somewhere that was well used but since he did not know how to throw it anyway it did not matter. After getting to Ethiopia, he was at the track and up walked the Russian javelin thrower. He held a beautiful almost new javelin. Our thrower, Clyde Deal, made hand motions to the Russian and asked if he could see his javelin. The Russian said "Sure, take it". Clyde looked at him with surprise on his face and asked, "Oh, do use speak English"? The Russian answered him, "No, I do not speak English, I speak American". Hmmmmmmmm. |

I wouldn't listen to Thomas - what he posted is actually quite inflammatory and is likely to get you a punch in the snout! (why would you say that about their mother anyway?). Just stick to "Privyet Kozyol". Kozyol is like "Amigo" in Spanish. It will be a hoot, I promise! |

I've spent a lot of time in Russia and have a lot of Russian friends. They are some of most friendly people you will ever meet. Go over and say hello ("Privyet"). |

A number of years ago just as Gorby was changing things a number of Russan warships came into Halifax Harbor at Xmas time. In a Navy town with a long history of warfare in the north Atlantic this was pretty big. The main thing that i noticed about the Russans was the ALL BUSINESS design, where American ships were almost comfortable and sleek the Russain stuff was bristeling with arms and the men slept in some of the amunition racks. Made the Yanks look like cruise ships in comparison. Great guys very friendly. |

Thanks for the info. I've been a fan of warships ever since I walked on the deck of the battleship Texas when I was 5 yrs old. How is overall condition of the Russian ship? Looking forward to the pics. |

There's a Russian ship parked in Pearl Harbor right now. I find it extremely cool, the ship looks reall badass. I'll post pics later, but they're hard to take because I can't get far enough away. The crew seems really friendly, and it's really cool to hear the Russian national anthem every morning right after our own, and to see their sailor walking around base in uniform. Tonight I'll post some pics. |
