Jim, COOL, i want one...!!! David, i'm using (ugh!) ACT! 2000... If i had proper funding (more like, if my boss hired someone else to do what i do and let me do what i wanted), we would've had a database that would've given a dead salesman a hard on... |

I banned his IP for a little bit so we could have an offline conversation. I want him to either shape up or ship out. Of course, all immaterial after Friday night when we can individually block who we want. |

Des, The key to database development is THINK AHEAD.Changeing schema's AFTER you start using the database is a major pain in the ass. They're not harder, just bigger. Bigger is almost never better. Efficency is still key in databases. I have some that have grown to oodlees of gigabytes and I a VERY pleased with how they have scaled over time. Even on MS SQL SERVER! Are you using mySQL or Access? |

We have a database here at work (absolutely not even close to what it sounds like you're doing) but i started it and i maintain it so i'm familiar with the time and effort that goes into it... i can only imagine how intricate yours is... |

DL, The reasons for his sister site were attributed to advice he got in a pending book deal. Yes, I too thought it was bending the truth, but when in Houston I saw the letter he received from the publisher requesting those particular actions. He was reluctant to show me since he is a private man by nature, and I certainly appreciate his candor with me. Anyway, it had to do with legality and proprietary information. Since, he has put off the book temporarily to concentrate on streamlining his business, but it is not out of the picture yet. Also, even if the integrity of his site is compromised one can't really knock a guy for giving free and accurate advice. Its just another outlet to help people out. As I've posted in other threads, when I was in Houston I saw him work into the wee hours of the night to catch up on time he had lost by posting help. It is indeed a labor of love. He isn't very hard up for cash either. The guy is sitting on a Miura (ex-Steve McQueen) from a collector standpoint, has a thriving business, and is now looking for a racing Ferrari (Alba or other endurance racer) he hopes to resurrect and use as his toy. I don't want to knock your credibility since I have never tangled with you DL (nor have I ever had a reason to), but again, I just feel compelled to defend a friend. From your previous posts that I've read you are a respected member of the board and would hate to see a JR's reputation tarnished simply because his short temper and misdirected passion in an online environment. Just be careful and understand that words hold a lot of weight in communities like these even when unproven or speculative. Cheers |

DES, Responses are in your questions: Dave, sounds pretty neat... i struggled to understand just about everything you just said, but i got it... MARVELOUS. How long have you been doing it...? Going on three years. How'd you get started...? A brilliant man(Head geologist on the APOLLO program at NASA) showed me a lot of the challenges associated with GIS. I liked the back end database and some of the webserver tools. I went from there Do you work for yourself or for a company...? Both. I own my own business and I work at a University doing a lot of differnt things. I do a lot from fixing printers(boring), teaching to modeling multigigabyte databases. Just the way it is when you have a small staff and only two full timers. Am i asking too many questions...? No Would you like to tell me to _u__ off...? I missed this questions meaning. Thanks for sharing, it sounds like an interesting career... You're welcome. It's fun, interesting and I have probably the best jobs in the world. -Dave |

Bob, You're right. I can't comment on that. Especially because I do know he has said things that at times led me to believe the same. All I can say is that once I met the man in person I was pleasantly surprised. Also, after speaking to him at length about his harsh reactions I can safely say that I understand (again, although I don't agree) why he went about his mannerisms in the way he did. I do think that he has come to the realization that his presence was counterproductive to all parties. And rather than to keep imposing his presence and expertise on people he has opted to move on, which explains his obvious absence. He has also publicly stated that he is not the best in people skills, and I respect that. Be it as it may, at the end of the day, onlines communities are funny that way. People tend to be quite different in person. Both for the better or worse. I'm not trying to make excuses for the guy, but as a friend I felt I had to represent the guy I gained as a friend, and not the uber-defensive JRV FChat so fondly loves to hate. I say give the guy a chance. Also keep in perspective how he found out about FChat (some random guy claiming JR's business was struggling and he was selling). Trust me when I say this, and others who know me personally on and off this board will vouch for this part. His business is doing fine and he is not selling, even at high offers. Cheers |

Taek, I don't think anyone here ever questioned JRV's ability to repair a car. That was never the issue as the guy may well be one of the best in the business. But who cares? JRV constantly came across as being a total jerk. His negative statements and rash comments were the worst. It's like introducing your new girlfriend to your parents. She's the most gorgeous, drop-dead woman you and your parents have ever seen in your lives. Then she opens her mouth and the pure smut nature of her true-self rears it's ugly head. I would never marry that woman and I will never use JRV's services. |

DL, Thanks for the fair warning. I have already stacked up bills in the five figures with JRV and have saved myself a bundle. Had I gone a different route, I would have been gouged for quite a bit more. He has yet to "nail me". Also, not to be abrasive, but how can one not know someone but know their type? You should at least know somebody to make a judgement call on their character. Again, I'm feeling like a friend is being attacked. I met JRV as an enthusiast and only lately (last couple of months) have I enlisted his services. He was not thinking of me in dollar figures, especially under the circumstances in which I met him. I consider myself a very fair judge of character and never made up my mind about any board member until I had direct dealings with them. Consequently, for the most part, I have nothing but great things to say about people in this community. Same goes for JRV. However, I do appreciate the word of caution since its always the afterthought that buries you. But like any friendship, car related or otherwise, one must take risks. So far, I have found my friendship with JRV to be a pleasant one, and if I were to view it materialistically, we have both gained from it. Cheers |

DES, A geospatial database(geodatabase) is a database with a location component that other computer applications can understand. Lots of people have databses with addresses but not many have those adresses geocoded(translated) to a method that GIS(gegraphic information systems) can understand. EVEN LESS have that data integrated with the other database information they have on a database server. This is a geodatabase. The benefit is a different way for people to LOOK at the data they collect. Being able to put stuff on a map and(this is the key part) analyze the data based on locations(Example: proximity to highways) is really what it's all about. This is where the value is for the customer. It's all about making better business decisions. Ask any of the business owners on here about putting a store in the wrong spot. Costly, costly, mistake. Tools with spatial data components (example: arcview business analyst) are used to help makes these decisions better and less "wild assed guesses"

I've left most of these threads untouched, but I feel I should jump in this time. I don't know who Il Commendatore is nor do I care to know who he is. I don't know Gary Green nor do I care who he is either. I do know JR Vallandingham and have had the distinct pleasure of becoming friends with the guy for the year or so. From my dealings with him, he is a very defensive man, and a very proud man. He may appear to have little tact in what he posts but consistently (aside from flame wars) he has been honest and presented valid points (although I have definitely disagreed on how they were presented). He has supplied me with invaluable information in purchasing cars, playing with cars, and caring for them. He has shown sympathy and friendship in our conversations and has always extended a warm welcome in my visits to Houston. He let me drive his Miura for around 100 miles at speeds north of 220kph (first time I had a police officer give me a thumbs up while going at those speeds!). Just handed me the keys and told my wife and I to just go out and have fun. I haven't been following what this agitation is all about, but for what its worth I have met the guy in person and he has been a true enthusiast in every way both for the cars and the open minded car community. I have also seen first hand what some of the "nightmares" he so fondly and aggressively speaks of, looks like. Patchwork repairs by an inept mechanic or do-it-yourselfer that have rendered the car inoperable or dangerous to drive. I have seen with disbelief how he patiently takes on abuse while customers curse at the car and Ferrari in general. He then becomes a mediator and works hard to salvage the customer's image on Ferraris and works hard to get a flawless car out the door. Needless to say I was very impressed with the quality of work from his shop and by the glowing recommendations from customers of his that I ran into (both Ferrari and Lamborghini). He has finally conceded that this online community may not be the best suited for him and has bowed out. I really don't think there is a need to further beat the man down for doing what he thought was the right thing. In the end, the guy is my friend and I can hardly stand aside as he gets cleaved by others here. Hope I didn't ruffle too many feathers as that was not my intention. Cheers |
