Stan Fox shattered both of his legs in this accident. If i recall he hit the wall head on then spun back into traffic and was T-Boned. This is what ripped the fron end off of the tub and sent him flying. When JV raced his first year in cart he T-Boned Hiro Matsushita at Phoenix the impact was so hard the tub was cracked all the way through almost up to the cockpit opening. If he had a secondary impact he would have ended up with the front of the tub detaching also. His impact with Hiro snapped the cosworth engine block open. It was quite cool since i had the chance to sneek a peek inside of the engine. There is nothing wrong with the design of the tub it did its job on the first impact. It is the second and third ones that can be deadly. I am sure that the first impact with the wall on tony Renia's crash at indy last week did not kill him it was the second one with the fence and grandstands that decided his fate. Jack: It was Jordan. For some reason the F-Chat software automatically changes that name to red dots.......... |

Brutal - With his foot on the wing of the red car, it looks like it's snaping or already snapped.... What was the extent of his injuries? A video would be a good find. |

Reminiscent of the Swede Savage crash at Indy 1973. But Swede didn't fare so well.

Tragic as this may be, I'll be honest, the second thought that came to my head (yes, I am ashamed) was 'Wow, the Flinstones have come a long way.' --Dan |

Safety also extends to course design. Max and Bernie wouldn't grant a GP to a track that would allow a 200mph. slam head on into a concrete wall. Many circuits have either lost their rights to host a GP or have been threatened with it due to a perception that the circuit is not safe. Motor racing is inherently dangerous (yes, F1 included), but that doesn't mean there isn't room to build in safety margins. Just my $.02. |

That was the race Jacques Villenueve won. Stan Fox hit the wall in Turn One - HEAD-ON - on the first lap. 200mph straight on into concrete - not a guardrail will destroy anything. Granted, that was 8 years ago, but even todays F1 cars would have a tough time with a head on crash into concrete at 200mph. Absolute miracle that Fox survived at all. I'll look for a video of it. |

You don't see damage like this on F1 cars. The US sanctioning bodies have to step into the modern age with regards to safety standards for cars and crash testing. I know these pictures aren't from the current season, but I'm not sure safety has improved much since then. |

Well, you have to give them credit that there is no fire, and that the car stayed on the track. Someday there is going to be a repeat of the Le Mans disaster, and a LOT of people are going to die. That's my opinion. I declined to watch the video of Zanardi's crash, just too disturbing for me, personally. These pix are fascinating, I had only seen one of them before. Racing is dangerous. |

If I'm not mistaken that was one of the frist IRL pieces of crap races at indy. The cars were badly designed and unsafe those first couple of years. ended the carrear of many a driver. Ended the life of a couple too. Would never have happend in a CART car....

I thought the engine/rear end should detach from the rest of the chassis to remove energy from the colision. Here, the wrong end 'left' the chassis. |

Stan Fox - Indianapolis 1995. He actually survived and tried to race once more. Ironically, he was killed in a car accident in NZ. Here's the article: INDIANAPOLIS Stan Fox, whose racing career ended five years ago in a gruesome crash at the Indianapolis 500, has been killed in an auto accident in New Zealand. The death Monday night of the 48-year-old driver from Janesville, Wis., was confirmed Tuesday by the U.S. Auto Club and a spokeswoman for Fox's brother. USAC spokesman Jordan said Fox was killed in a head-on collision on a stretch of highway about 200 miles south of Auckland known as ''The Desert Road.'' Fox was in New Zealand working for head-injury support units in that country. |
