Mike, if you're gonna start planing on linguistics sometime, make sure the blade is sharp. heeheehee Ricky - if you are so inclined, fire it over to me via my profile page's contact option. I've proofread oodles of doodles, as most seekers of analysis/input/revision come back for more. Many a Script, Play, Artist's Statement, Application Essay... has been scanned by my X-Ray vision. |

I'm planing on majoring in Linguistics, and I'm gonna try to petition for a minor in Finance from Wharton. Eventually, I want to get an MBA and work in international venture capital. I'd go straight for Wharton undergrad, but I've heard lately that MBA programs and companies sometime prefer students with liberal arts backgrounds, so that they're more well rounded. Plus, Linguistics happens to be an academic passion of mine. |

You are right about the separate pools thing - what do you want to study? Also, hey, the drug smuggling is entrepreneurship - that would score me some points I think |

Dear Penn, I am writing to inform you of a certain person named "Rikky Alessi" who is applying to Wharton. I feel it would be a horrible decision to admit this person, as I have personally witnessed this disgrace to humanity. He is a repeated elder abuse offender, and has been known to steal candy from small children, before shuffling them in to a maroon van with tinted windows. Two of the children are still missing. Also, it is important to note that his interest in business is due to the fact that he is currenty running a drug smugling operation from South America, and he wishes to learn the most efficient ways for rapid expansion. Finally, he was recently seen taking airplane lessons with a fake ID. Please take this into consideration when deciding whether or not to admit Mr. Alessi. -Thank You, Mike Fernandez
Actually, I think they consider the Wharton pool separately from the College pool, so I don't think we're even competing against each other. It's wierd how you can just walk on to a a campus and just "feel" like its the one or not. My parents don't believe in it, so they made me take tours and info sessions of like 10 schools. Penn I really liked, and the rest were like "not my first choice, but I could see myself here." The exception was Tufts. The second I got out of the car I knew it wasn't right for me. |

Thanks Dr. Erik, I sent a copy to her. As to Mike's suggestion... well... if anyone "happens" to find a list of ALL of the other applicants, I may just have to write a few letters Actually though, I feel that I have a pretty good shot, it is just that it is really the only school (of those I visited) that jumped out and said, "this is it!" Funny as it may sound... Thanks for the help. |

Good luck Rikky. To improve your chances, you may want to write the admissions office a REALLY nasty letter, full of profanities and hate, then sign it "Sincerely, Mike Fernandez". But hey it's up to you. Just kidding. The best one I heard about was the essay where the writer was asked to define courage. The essay was one word... "this". I still think that's great. |

I just finished my college essay for the University of Pennsylvania (Wharton), and was wondering if anyone good at this sort of thing would take a look over it? It is pretty complete but an extra set of eyes or two can always be helpful, and I figure that there is someone out there who is good at this thing! If willing, just shoot me an email at [email protected] Thanks a lot.
