Final results are in (and so as not to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen the race and will watch it later)....if you want to know the stats you can go here: http://www.imsaracing.net/menu/lagunaindex.cfm?page=/2002/events/laguna/almsrace.htm The Olive Garden 550 had a DNF over a $10 suspension part (they plan to have 2x 550 next season), one of the 2 'vettes caught on fire (a BIG fire!) - do to an earlier collision with a Caddy Prototype (which cracked the header of the 'vette - causing the fire) the other Corvette ran out of fuel while going neck and neck with the Prodrive 550 (IIRC on the 2nd to last lap) but since it was 5 laps ahead of the Viper it placed before the Dodge. All in all a great fun day of racing. First pix (not mine) are here: http://www.theracesite.com/index.cfm?pagetype=2&form_article=4208 http://www.theracesite.com/index.cfm?pagetype=2&form_article=4218 http://www.imsaracing.net/menu/photosindex.cfm?page=/2002/events/laguna/lagunaphoto21.cfm -Ben |

MONTEREY, Calif. (September 3, 2002) - With several racing teams joining the American Le Mans Series for the final events of 2002, the starting grid for the Sept. 22 Monterey Sports Car Championships event at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca will have a different look than series fans have been accustomed to this summer. Three teams that have not been series regulars this season have entered the event, which is Round 7 of the 10-event American Le Mans Series season. The teams will have new and different-looking cars in the LMP 900, GTS and GT classes, respectively. The successful Prodrive team from England has entered a Ferrari 550 Maranello in the GTS class for Tomas Enge of the Czech Republic and Peter Kox of The Netherlands. The Prodrive car is expected to provide an immediate threat to the class-dominating Chevrolet Corvette C5-R team, which has won all seven ALMS races this season. Prodrive's team competed in the 2001 ALMS season finale at Road Atlanta and in this year's 12 Hours of Sebring, but has been in Europe since then. The car led its class at Le Mans this year before retiring with mechanical problems. In the GT class, a Ferrari 360 Modena will compete under the banner of Risi Competizione. Accomplished drivers Anthony Lazzaro of Acworth, Ga., and Ralf Kelleners of Germany will share the machine and will seek to end the seven-race winning streak of Porsche in the GT class. Joining the LMP 900 class will be the Chamberlain team, which has entered a Dome S-101 powered by a Judd engine. The Japanese-built Dome has run competitive speeds at Le Mans, especially in 2002, and has been successful in other forms of racing. The event at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca will be its first in the ALMS, and the Chamberlain team has yet to name its drivers for the race. The ALMS race starts at 12 noon (PDT) on Sunday, Sept. 22. Practice and qualifying will be held on the previous day, along with an autograph session for ALMS drivers. In addition to the American Le Mans Series race, the weekend at Mazda Raceway will also include races for the SPEED World Challenge GT and Touring cars, the Star Mazda Series, the Mazda Miata Challenge and World SuperKarts. Ticket information for the Monterey Sports Car Championships is available online at www.laguna-seca.com or by calling 1-800-327-7322. The race will be televised live in the United States by NBC Sports beginning at 4 p.m. (EDT). Live coverage by the American Le Mans Series Radio Web can be heard online at www.americanlemans.com.
