Jim, You are right about the Pontiac GTO reference. As for the drivers hmmmm, this is what I could find: Maserati - Rod Wilson - never heard of him ... Lamborgini - Paul Stokell - excellent driver with good single seater experience. Viper - Greg Crick - I have heard of this guy, touring car driver, but new to Viper I believe. Ferrari 360 - Allan Simonsen - never heard of him ... Monaro - Peter Brock - Huge race career and a legend in Australia ... This series suffers from gentlemen drivers, thus we usually have 3, maybe 4 decent drivers and the rest a laughable. Infact the number of car to car incidents and stupid collisions just shows the lack of experience many have. Thus is conclusion I have no idea if the Maserati has a better driver than the Ferrari ... Occasional John Bowe (professional Aussie driver) drives a Ferrari and gives the Lambo a very hard time if not actually winning the race ... but he did not drive at the AGP, due to other commitments. Pete

Pete Thanks for the posting pics. I think this is the car that they're planning to sell in the US as the new Pontiac GTO. Were the Maser drivers much better that the 360 drivers or is the Maser fast? Best Jim |

Jim, Here is the road car from www.holden.com.au, great looking cars:
Race car from www.procar.com.au, blowing them all away (Note the Maserati in the background ... infront of a F360):
Note the Monaro was driven by Peter Brock, one of Australias most experienced and successfull touring car drivers ... some of the others, er, are not at this level, but a few are. Pete |

Yeah, I read about it. The unfair advantage (cheats) were allowed when the first time the series allowed the Holdens to go up against the Hondas and Toyotas around in the mid-'90s, the Japanese cars wiped the floor with them. It's their series, they can do anything with it I guess. |

Vipers have been available in NZ and Australia in RHD format for a while now. Seen heaps of them and we have more than one racing ... As for the Holden Monaro in the Australian Nations Cup, er, well in my honest opinion it is the most amazing bit of cheating I have ever seen and just shows you what a major car company (Holden is THE Australian car ... er, or so the Australians naively believe) can do to rule and stuff a good series up. The car that they have built has basically got the biggest v8 that they could find in the GM warehouse the 427 (this motor is race trim bears almost no resemblence to the road car that you can now buy ... note the road car came out after the first race win!!!), the front suspension has been remanufactured to be a twin wishbone racing design (the standard Holden Monaro has a Macpherson strut). What the end result of this is that Holden will get a short burst of attention via publicity but the series will die, because nobody else wants to race in this series anymore ... because they are unbeatable, and it is totally unfair. The series is supposed to be about road cars, not purpose built racecars. Ferrari would have to race the 550GTOs to be even close to competitive. Holden cheats in the V8 Supercars (they have special dispensation to lower their engines in the chassis, etc.), and has cheated further with this series. Shame on them, and there is no way that I would buy a Holden or have anything to do with the company after this, as it shows the companies attitude and what they are prepared to do to look like winners. I assume this to be the Australian Nations Cup race. A Holden is an Australian car brand, now part of the GM group. The Holden Munaro will be released as the Pontiac GTO soon in the US. Oh yeah, the Viper I assume is unique, in the fact that it's a RHD car, the first Vipers in the world to be in that configuration (Australian law bans the use of LHD cars, I read in Autocar that DaimlerChrysler was making RHD versions of the Viper so they could sell it in Oz-land). Only a few hours left before first practice! |
