How long has HANS been on the market anyway? Wasn't it introduced in around 2000 or so?

Andreas:

When I was racing, in the 60s, guys would buy the lightest leathers they could find, to save the weight. I think that some of them would have raced in the nude if they could get someone to let them. There was no thought about safety then, winning was everything.

Mitch is correct. FIA rule for F1 drivers states the driver must be able to exit the cockpit in five seconds with one foot on the ground and out of the car.

I recently got some literature from Sparco (maker of nomex race suits) and this rule is mentioned in detail in their F1 section.

The problem with all this is the way it has been introduced with so little collaberation between the drivers and the FIA.

Not sure I agree. HANS is a pain and discomfort and therefore a disadvantage to wear. That's why it was made mandatory.

I don't think competitive racers put safety over an advantage. Or as Lauda once put it: "If it would help, drivers would sit on the nose of the car."

I would still keep HANS mandatory (assuming it is really saving lives) and leave it to Dr. Sid to give a dispensation for medical reasons.

Guess what...looks like the FIA has finally wised up and granted drivers, Rubens at least, the ability to decide NOT to wear the HANS. Good move. If a driver decides not to wear a safety system that should be his/her choice, if their employer mandates it they can either go elsewhere or wear it. Personal choice is always best.

For you club racers anyone use or see the G-force SRS1 system? That one seems better than hutchenson, Simpson and Hans. Hans seesm the best but must be custom and is costly and is a big pain to travel around with. SRS1 seems like a system people will use. The simpson system really hurts.

Well, it is no longer a driver/team choice. It is mandated by the FIA and probably for some good reasons.

I just read that Rubens blaimed his shunt on the HANS device. He said that is was so painful as to interfere with his concentration. This should be a driver/team choice - if either one want's it then he wears it.

If the drivers were tethered to the car, they would be trapped in it, nevermind a 10-second evac. What surprised me was to see how fragile the actual helmet attachments seemed. They said that the drivers' suits had to be redesigned as well, with the epaulets moved so they wouln't be covered by the shoulder harnesses of the device.

I'm going with a HANS device this season, along with Schroth Hybrid II-H Belts. The belts are specifically designed for the HANS device. I am then going to look into what I can do regarding the lateral G's as well.
Can't play with safety.

Don't know much about NASCAR, but wouldn't a HANS have prevented Earnhart from getting killed?

I never quite understood why the F1 drivers were/are acting like primadonnas when it came to HANS. I bet there is a reason why it has been standard in US racing for years. I bet this will be only a passing time until it gets fully accepted.

Another thing, the rules still require the driver to be able to leave the car within 5 seconds of it comming to a stop. The HANS device goes with the driver.

Good point never thought about that. I guess when you're talking about that much g force it would decapitate the driver.

I guess everything works a little different in the F1 world.

Because belt stretch would take the drivers head (As Dirty Harry said)"Clean Off"

I was just wondering why don't the tether the driver's helmets to the car instead of shoulder mounted system?

Would that make the system easier to use?
