One of them is for sale. I believe it's going to be auctioned soon. Hemmings also lists an Scarab F1 engine and tons of Scarab memorablia. Best Jim |

Anybody know what happened to the Scarab Formula 1 cars? Where would they be now? |

Wayne Interesting link, thanks. You're right I think both of these came from the Birdcage. Best Jim |

Hey Jim, check out what I found: http://www.eng.vt.edu/fluids/msc/chap/chap1.htm It's interesting to read that Jim Hall was running a Maser Birdcage at the time Chaparral 1 was developed because Chap 1 actually looks damnned near identical to the Maser. |

Wayne You got it. Interesting story. Wasn't Barbara Hutton his mother? I think Augie Pasbt III was original owner/driver. I saw that F1 Scarab once as well as Augie's car. Both were cool. I think the Scarab was similar to the first Chaparral which I think was built by Troutman and Barnes as well. Chevy motor as I remember. Best Jim |

Jim, it was Maserati. Did some "Web digging." From May 2002: Lot # 126 RM Auctions, Santa Monica, 5/25/2002. 1953 Fiat/Maserati 642 Transporter; S/N 000697; White, Blue "Scarab" / Dilapidated; Estimate $70,000 - $90,000; Unrestored original, 5+ condition; Hammered Sold at $50,000 plus commission of 10.00%; Final Price: $55,000 -- Fiat 642 diesel enclosed transporter used by Maserati from '53-'57 with unique Maserati-style grille, then bought by Reventlow for the Scarab team in '57 and repainted in Scarab colors with logo by Von Dutch. Untouched since Scarab folded and pretty dilapidated, with the plastic forks from the team's last meal still littering the interior. Rotting panels, peeling paint, crummy interior. Needs comprehensive restoration. -- Sold to a prominent collection of non-Ferrari Italian cars in Connecticut so it will probably reappear in Maserati livery at some time. Tom Shaughnessy suggested sending it to the Milan bus company which mechanically restored his ex-Scuderia Ferrari Fiat open transporter. It's going to take a ton of money, but it's the only one around and will make some statement when it's done.

Jim, wasn't it a Maserati team transporter, not Ferrari that Reventlow bought and used? I think that he was even racing a Maserati at the time and believe he already had the transporter before he started the Scarab project. Can't remember where I read it (Forza?) but I'll look for the article when I get home tonight. |

I got to see this car up close recently at Road America. I can only paint some broad strokes here, but a couple years ago (and still is, I assume) it was owned, driven and loved by Augie Pabst III, of the brewing family. They held a vintage racing display during an SCCA meet and he really drove the hell out of it! I know the car makes it to a lot of meets--nice to know it's not rotting away in a museum--and you can certainly get up close and ask questions about it. You can tell he takes a lot of pride in the car just by looking at it, and by the way he looks at it himself! Keep your eyes open for historic races in your area, and it'll probably show up. Please feel free to correct any inaccuracies |

Wayne, You of all people should know that the period transporter you like was the one Lance bought from Ferrari and used to haul his F1 team around in. Thats why when it turned up in that barn it was painted Scarab Blue. Best Jim |

On my lunch break, i stopped into the 'memorabilia' store and found an FAO Schwartz 'Vintage Racecar Series' box with 3 1:43 cars in it- a Ferrari Daytona 365 GTS/4, some old Porsche and a Scarab... The Scarab looks pretty cool and i'm wondering if we can get some of the racing/racecar buffs to share some information/pictures/experiences... Thanks... |
