But he went to that team for the money, when he could have had a better car for less... |

in terms of teams, i have a lot of respect and admiration for maclaren. ron dennis is not the most exciting guy but they run a really tight shop. and i think kimi is great, and a future multiple wc. that being said i have always had a soft spot for fisi and villeneuve. i think fisi hasn't ever had a good enuf car to really shine, which is just bad luck. villeneuve has recently disappointed with his attitude, but driving for a team for 5 yrs can do that to you i guess. |

>>>Can't say much for Norbert Most funny "off track" moment in racing (to me) comes from Nobby... Can't recall the race from the top of my head but it was a DTM race where one of the taxi's hit a rabbit on track (poor beast) which happened at a moment that that car was in close-up by one of the camera men and who caught the rabbit "in full flight" on film... Haug dashed off to the TV director and begged him "Now MR Xxxxx, you don't want to broadcast THAT, do you? Please? Don't you? Please? You do? Ow.." You probably had to be there to appreciate it... After Ferrari, BMW - I'm a big Fan of Gerhard B. from way back. Sir Frank can be something, but he has done some incredible things. Sauber - Ferrari engine Jordan - clearly the best babes anywhere, and that's good enough for me. Teams I do not care about: McLaren - Thatassholerondennis (one word) has besmirched two great racing names. Can't say much for Norbert. Jaguar - Another great marque, and I used to cheer for them. Now totally in racing the wrong way, even more eaten up with snide politics than the Italian press. Guess I never forgave them for sacking Rahal without giving him a chance. |

Have to agree with Andreas on the Fins... First time I went there, I couldn't figure them out at all. 15 years down the road now, I LOVE them! They must be the friendliest people on earth, completely underrating themselves and indeed a people of few words. Kimi does nothing but making me smile as the toughest part of the race is trying to understand what he is saying... LOVE IT! Jack |

Sauber followed by Jaguar followed by Minardi, being Aussie and all that I personally hope Renault do well as at least they make the whole car unlike most English competitors (Jag/Ford, McLaren/Merc, Williams/BMW) |

You know, it would be nice to be able to root for Jack Vill-neff for sentimental reasons because his parents were very decent to me as a rookie in formula atlantic. Unfortunately, Jack isn't 1/10th the man his father was, and (although I haven't seen him in person since he was 8ish!!), he seems to positively get off on ignoring his father's legend. Just a weird dude, Swiss-schooled and raised in entitlement. Kinda gotta like Webber, he seems to really give it some stick! |

Brian, I can appreciate your intention for the thread. I have to confess that my motive was much the same. I like to think that, while watching racing, I don't have to think about politics for a couple hours. It just happens to be an ironic twist that, of all the teams rising out of mediocrity, Renault has to be the one! |

Jack, I would never evaluate *individual* people based on nationality. If I meet a Frenchman on the street, I'll treat them as friendly as anyone else. Now, if they spew Chirac's positions to me, then all that changes! I only evaluate groups/entities based upon who/what they represent... or where the money goes. Thus, I don't care what nationality the team members are. Rather, ... Andreas, this isn't the forum to discuss it further, but I choose to boycott purchase of any French products... Renault cars being one (to discuss more on boycotting the French, see several threads in the Off-Topic forum). And since victory in F1 is obviously perceived as good for Renault's bottom line, I choose to cheer against that happening. (In fact, for those of you who read Off-Topic, I'll be cheering for them to be going backwards down the track. ) I started this thread somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but I was curious if I got the team ownership representation issues right... I'll be cheering for Michelin to show poorly... for Renault to show poorly... and so on... All giving me a bit more to cheer for than past years... though cheering for Rubens and for Ferrari will remain top priority! So far, so good.

Jack, nice analysis. I think the whole anti French thing has gone too far. They are total pigs for their stand on Irak, same goes for the Germans, but now that the war is coming to a good end/victory, they are now even to start rooting with us. What wiesels! But that doesn't affect my opinion about French F1 teams or other good French things like their cheese, wine or country. And yes, buy an American car: When I first came to the US I wanted to just do that, so I bought a freakin'g Probe and was proud (the car was a piece of s_hit) and told my boss about it. He looked at me puzzled then told me, that I just bought a freakin Nissan...never again. If you wanna buy American, get a Toyota, built by Americans at least. Aside from that I have to say my sympathies mostly lie with Anthony's statement. I like Kimi for his weirdness. I hated Mika for the longest time in the press conference until I went to Finland and understood, that this is how these people are. They are not snobs or blaze, they just don't talk on TV. After that I started to get amused by Mika's terse comments. He could win the WC and say 'yes, the race was ok'. Kimi is just like him. It's actually funny. And IMHO a lot more refreshing than anything what I ever heard out of Nigel's mouth AFTER he went to the US racing for Indy. I used to love the Lion, but not after the big US corporations cleaned his mouth. He no longer gave race reports, but made sure he mentioned as many sponsors within 10 seconds as possible. Kinda like watching a down hill skier lift up his skis after arriving in the finish area. Pathetic! |

I can understand my fellow Americans being disappointed with the French government for their stance on the Iraq issue, but to extend that to a dislike for a multi-national team like Renault is a bit of a stretch, in my opinion. Here's a breakdown: Drivers: Jarno Trulli--Italian Fernando Alonso--Spanish Allan McNish--Scottish Team Management: Flavio--Italian Mike Gascoyne--British Pay Symonds--British Main Sponsors/Partners: Mild Seven--Japanese Hanjin Shipping--Eastern Corridor 3D Systems--USA Alpine Stars--Italian Catia (IBM)--USA Elf and Renault are the only prominent French aspects of the team. It's kind of like saying "buy American" when looking for a car.

I like most of the teams and drivers. I was pleased to see Alonso do well. Brian, you seem to have something against the French? I have never liked Coulthard. He is a waste of space and has always been in a race-winning car, but has never looked like a serious contender. I have a fairly deep loathing for Ron Dennis and his whole McLaren team aswell. I do like Kimi though. I like the way he is a real 'racer'. It's a pity his press conference performances are so dire! At Williams I like JPM but I think Ralf is over-rated and over-paid. I hope to see Justin Wilson do well as he is from Sheffield where I live. Keep an eye out for a kid called Christian England (great name for headline writers) who is doing quite well in British F3. He is from my home town of Barnsley. |

Ferrari Sauber Toyota Minardi Jaguar Dont care about the rest. Dont like Renault ( Pilots and Briatore ) , Dont like Mclaren ( Kimi is the contrary of what a F1 pilot used to be and Coulthard is just transparent ) , Dont like Williams ( Montoya loves to bash Ferrari but still needs to achieve , Ralf just does his jobs and Frank is almost as cold as Kimi ) , Dont like BAR ( JV is the biggest mouth on earth and a hippy as well ) ,Dont like Jordan anymore ( Fisichella has no charisma whatsoever and Firman is unknown..) |

Funny pick based on the current situation. Ignoring all that, here is my list: 1) Ferrari 2) Sauber, they use a Ferrari engine 3) Toyota, because they build the whole car Renault, same argument Jaguar, ditto 4) Williams, because Montoya sits in one of them (love the guy) 5) Jordan, because I don't care about them Minardi BAR 6) McLaren, because DC sits in one of them (hate the guy) Bottom line: F1 gives everybody a reason to love/hate a particular team/driver/car. That's what makes it everything to everybody.

Okay, while watching the qualifying today, I realized I wasn't sure who I wanted to be cheering for! This season should be a bit more interesting, as I have good reason to prefer teams that in past years I was neutral on. Do I have this right? After Ferrari, I think I'll be rooting for: Jordan BAR Sauber and then, due to use of French tires: Minardi Jaguar Toyota and then, due to French tires and German engine: Williams Mclaren and at the very bottom, the way too French: Renault May they never finish a race. ;) Did I get that right? Or did I forget anything?
