What do you guys think of some fresh talents out of Formula 3000/Renault/Nippon or some kart series ? Are you following those kind of series aswell ?

As for Ferrari, I think they'll go for Massa. Ferrari normally let the developing of younger talents up to teams like Sauber and Renault, before they pick someone as their test/final driver.

Neel did his first Sauber test this week (the previous one was just going up and down on a straight) and was over 4 seconds behind Nick. He drove very conservatively, but this is still way too far off the pace if you e.g. compare it to Rosberg junior's debut.

Hey Dom,

she's a racerchick already? ;-)

MFZ,

>>>Jack, doing both F1 and MotoGP in the same season would be suicide!

I know but it's still nice to dream up such scenario's!

:-D

Although I was not too impressed with his performance in the Peugeot in the San Remo rallye, I think he could be awesome in a car on a closed track.

He wouldn't be the first to make a succesfull switch from bikes to cars.

Jack, doing both F1 and MotoGP in the same season would be suicide! Back when MotoGP's main event was the 500cc two stroke bikes, an American did both the 500cc and 250cc races on the same season, on the same day, on the same team!

He was Freddie Spencer, he did this in 1985, I believe. He was Honda's main rider, he already beat Kenny Roberts in 1983 for the 500cc, but injuries felled his title defence in 1984. In 1985, he decided to run both the 500cc and 250cc classes. He wrapped up the 250 cc class very early and stopped racing 250cc bikes to concentrate on his 500cc campaign, which is still undecided.

After the dust settled, he did won both titles in the same year, helped by the then new Honda NSR 500 V4 two-stroke motorcycle. The only person to do so. The after effects? His career faded, and he never again reached his heights.

Anyway, supposedly Rossi hates Schumacher, back in 1997, he was supposedly rooting for Villeneuve to win, even going so far as to make a wager with his then Aprilia pit crew, if Schumacher wins the DWC, he'll run naked across the pitlane.

Still, it would be nice to see him race in F1, we need characters like him, a huge contrast to Kimi. His antics when he wins are often so outrageous!

How about this scenario:

January 2005
Ferrari spa announces the acquisition of the Ducati Motorcycle empire.

March 2005
Ducati signs Valentino Rossi as # 1 rider.

April 2005
VR does his first laps in the Ferrari F2005 at Fiorano and proves to be fast.

June 2005
Schumacher crashes badly at Fiorano while trying to overtake VR who has been consistently faster.

June 2005
VR replaces MS as # 1 driver at Ferrari AND remains the # 1 in Ducati MotoGP team.

October 2005
VR snatches second place in the F1 Worldchampionship behind Kimi Raikonen AND is again MotoGP Champion with Ducati

January - December 2006
VR Rulezzzzzzzz!

Hahahahahaha

I don't think Neel paid for a chance to test drive the Sauber. Supposedly Peter Sauber's team is one of the more well-funded mid-pack teams, like BAR and Jaguar.

I still think Neel Jani has a bright future in F1, and Peter Suaber would be the man who first spotted him, just as he spotted Kimi and Felipe (who probably just needs more experience as opposed to Kimi, who is fast straight out of the box).

ok, while we're dreaming....
schumi retires in 04, but buys the team along with his buddies todt, brawn, byrne, (maybe luca and bernie too).
they sign alonso and fisi. the tifosi are happy and they continue to win races.
kimi is great, but so 'personality free' that he's tough to rally behind. plus he is needed elsewhere to keep the fight going. he is perfect for maclaren.
don't want jpm. like him fine, but williams needs somebody strong too.

Me, I am thinking Mark Webber would be an interesting pick. I wonder if they could convert the Ferrari cockpit to fit him???

Dont think so either. Neel is Swiss and the Sauber team would love to see one of their own in the car, so would probably main sponsor Credit Suisse.

Neel is doing a great job running in the Renault cup (kinda like Formula 3) and seems to have some great talent.

So my guess is, he got the drive for free, but he isn't a test driver either.

What is amazing though is Sauber's ability to pick the talented drivers. He did it with Kimi, to some degree with Massa (hey, if Ferrari takes him on, he can't be that bad) and maybe with this kid as well.

Or maybe Neel is paying the right price for the testing "opportunity"...

'Signed' is a bit of a strong word. Neel got the chance to test drive the Sauber a few times (first up and down a straight), now some more. This has less to do with developing the Sauber car, but more with giving Neel a chance. So far he looks promising, but it is too early to say, whether this will go any further and how far etc.

Massa is still their main test driver (after he is done testing the Ferrari).

Sauber just signed a kid by the name of Neel Jani as their test driver. Watch out for him.

MS' contract expires at the end of next year. By 2005 Alonso and Kimi won't even be 25 years old. They'll be in their prime and not also-runs.

Any kid coming out of F3000 normally still needs a couple of seasons in F1 to become WC material.

The team does need a top #1 driver or the fans will stay home. I was at Monaco 2000 and saw the fans leave when MS dropped out. RB is not a top driver and never will be. Ferrari needs to recruit a well liked top driver to continue where MS leaves off when he finally decides to hang it up. Alonso was spectacular in Spain. Kimi has raw talent. They both will be also rans by the time MS retires. Look to the up and coming ranks in F3000 to find the next Ferrari World Champion.

>>>Sort of a "see ya soon" rub.

Exactly!

>>>Maybe it would be better to have JPM and Kimi drive together, to finally see 2 Ferraris having at it.

Would be nice but I fear that team orders would put a quick end to that....

>>>we may be cursing the domination of Renault or someone else.

Hey, we need SOMETHING to about!

Hahahaha!

Andreas:

>>>but I'm not sure I want to see that Pironi vs Villeneuve year again

I would like to have the Senna / Prost years back but helas...

Of course there are pros and cons to team orders (mostly cons), but I'm not sure I want to see that Pironi vs Villeneuve year again. It was great to watch, but we all know how it ended.

Jack, I'm glad you mentioned the belly-rubbing incident. I noticed that as well. Sort of a "see ya soon" rub. I hope that, when Schumi retires, Ferrari retire his #1 status contract clause with him. Maybe it would be better to have JPM and Kimi drive together, to finally see 2 Ferraris having at it. Although, by the time this is even relevant, we may be cursing the domination of Renault or someone else.

>>>Once their top driver was gone, management (read Todt) lost interest and the team quickly fell behind.

I fear that will happen with the fans as well...

It is VERY easy to be cheering for the certain winner but takes guts to support an underdog.

Most remakable in that respect to me was Monaco 2000 where all the Ferrari fans IMMEDIATELY left the track after MS crashed out of the race (suspension problems) eventhough RB was still driving his gut out...

Maybe that is also why I am no fan of MS as it is so easy to be the fastest when you're talented and have the best (read biggest $$$$) team behind you.

For me racing is "fighting" and if there's no fighting, it's boring.

In that respect it is much more fun to see Verstappen and MS battle it out on a kart track where they are just about equal opponents and not hindered by the huge differences in car / kart.

Just my 0.02 Lira.

Interesting rumour Jack. Haven't heard it, but could quite be possible after MS contract runs out. Only iffy part: Also Todt, Brawn and some more people will then leave the team most likely and go into retirement or elsewhere.

The 2005 Ferrari might carry some advantage from 2004, but for how long? Remember what happened to the Scuderia after Silverstone 99? Once their top driver was gone, management (read Todt) lost interest and the team quickly fell behind. So I'm worried a bit about the future. Hopefully Montezemolo will build a new team around Alonso (?) to carry the scarlett cars forward.

After all the success in F1 comes and goes in waves.

Alonso for sure, but Alonso and Rubens? That would be interesting. I wonder who the #2 would be? :-)

If we're guessing about Rubens' successor as well... Hmm..... I'd vote for either Fisi, JPM, or Kimi.

I agree with what Andreas is sort of saying... Kimi and JPM should NEVER be on the same team. They are far too entertaining in battle.

Nice rumour that just came from the pits in Barcelona:

Alonso could be in a Ferrari cockpit by 2005...

Also note the "belly rubbing" of Ross Brawn with Alonso right after the ceremony (rumour came out before the ceremony already).

I love F1. Alain Prost was my favorite. I just hope that the next drivers have a little more presence. This batch is fast but man are they dull.

I think the next Ferrari F1 driver, allready works for ferrari: Felipe Massa, the new test driver!

He's also very fast, don't know what about the 'killer instinct'!

And if they can't find anyone, they can always call me of course! :-)

As long as Ferrari has the fastest car on the track, it's all fine by me!
I always supporter for the scuderia and not for a driver!

CIAO...

I thought of Montoya too and although he was initialy my hero, he doesn't seem to be getting "off the ground" as I expected.

Mark Webber? Mmmm... FAST but IMHO lacks the killer instinct...

Wurz? same thing

Pizzonia? Nah

Button? Mmmm... Is more Coulthard Jr. to me....

Fisi? Would be nice in a Ferrari cockpit but again no killer instinct...

Doesn't leave much.

DeMatta? Mmmm... still has to prove himself but COULD be a good alternative.

Actually I'd like to see Kimi NOT in a Ferrari cockpit, but in the best other car there is (Mc Laren, Williams, Renault) to keep the battle interesting.

So who gets the Ferrari? Montoya!

Think of what Kimi-JPM did in Hockenheim last year. That kind of stuff as a year long battle. But Montoya is already getting up there in the years, so we have to pick somebody younger. So how about Alonso?

As the guys that rule today are all rumoured to stop within 2 - 3 years, I was thinking about the next generation and whom I would like to see in a Ferrari cockpit...

I would go for Kimi and Alonso.... (ducking now!).

They are both incredibly fast, young and relatively pleasant personalities (don't know how that latter part will develop though...).

Any other thoughts?

Jack
