Murray Walker: "He left a bit of rubber on that wall." That famous quote made it even into the official FIA F1 PC game. Which reminds of a driver years ago, who wasn't fluid in English and explained after his slow Monaco qualifying session, that he picked up too many condoms along the way. What he meant was, that his tires picked up too much rubber from the other cars.

F1 is IF backwards He's storming to the back of the field Anything can happen in formula 1 and it usually does. Many of the mechanics in F1 refer to the keenest and most obsessive fans as 'bobble hats'. |

Flying "W". From Motocross racing. Forks bottom out, rear kicks up, throwing you up off the seat. You are still holding onto the handlebars and your legs are straight up over your head and spread apart. Been there, done that, got more than the shirt. |

Tank slapper came from motorcycle racing. Since the fuel tank sits in front of your chest on a motorcycle, when you experience lost of control of your bike, the first thing to hit you hard would be the tank. Hence, tank slapper. |

car slides off outside of tack and into barrier: "He was moving along really well until he got too deep into the corner and ran out of talent." |

That was a LURID slide! Not slang, but a good saying: "How to make a small fortune in racing - start with a large one!" |

"He was schooled" = a driver who thought he was the bees' knees (hot shitte) was humiliated by a much better driver on track Sort of like Ralf S. was twice yesterday... BTW, I have met Hobbs, and believe me, he is MUCH funnier in person! And he loves to drink!!

I've always loved the way Brits use the English language. They seem to make things up as they go along. The only one that comes to mind right now is "tank slapper". |

Well, Hobbs (on Speed) is a walking/talking encyclopedia of racing slang. Or maybe it is just British English. Love the 'kittie litter' for the gravel traps. Always imagine a cat walking by doing its thing next to a parked car and then bury it. Or his 'chaos theory', which really hasn't anything to do with the real chaos theory, but is rather the law of averages from statistics (I think somebody must have pointed that out to him as this season he mostly uses that term correctly). |

I just read another thread where the term "chick magnet" was used which made me think about racing slang (don't ask me how my brain works!). The best one I know was "invented" by a tv commentator with whom I once "did" the Le Mans 24 and he used it when cars would spin of into the run-off of area or go into the wall as if they were "drawn" in that direction: "And Skinny Henri is again behind that wall employing his Carbon Magnet!" Skinny Henri is Dutch slang for "Death" but I really like the "Carbon Magnet"... Anybody else who knows of weird "racing slang"? Jack |
