During practice for the Detroit race, a friend of mine and I walked around and found a stairway that went down to trackside, right where the cars exited a tunnel. I talked the guard into letting me go down for a few minutes to snap some pics. Once down there, I instantly realized I was out of film, but the experience was awesome. |

Well, I'll never forget de Cesaris, it's just I didn't remember it was him in that other Ligier. Anyway, as far as the pictures are concerned, remember, these were the eighties and F1 just about to get commercialized, but not quite yet. So my driver shots were all from the Hockenheim GP, where I was able to snatch an official press pass thanks to my local towns newspaper (ridiculous by today's standards). The Monaco GP pictures were taken during practice. As it is still the case today, it is A LOT easier to take pictures during practice/qualifying as you're not restricted to your seat. In those days you could even walk up litterally to the guardrail and fire away. Nobody would grab you. I have some shots, where I had to use a wide angle lens as otherwise the cars wouldn't fit into the shot anymore... Unthinkable today, I know. So the next best thing is a really long lens and/or one of those VIP passes for the pitlane. |

By the way, Andreas. What do you do, run on the track and take photos until the Gendarmes nab you? Also, how can you forget "DeCrasheris"?! Back to the photo pile for me... |

We're nothing if we're not honest ; ). I think Forix is a brilliantly done site. I'm not cheap, I just don't visit it or Atlas enough to warrant paying. Although I probably should to "help the cause". |

Since we're all making confessions: I didn't really remember de Crasheris. It's just that his name was visible on one of my pictures... cheater, I know |

Jack, I have to 'fess up. I did a search on 'Detroit 1984 f1' I remember de Cesaris but like Andreas I couldn't remember his teammate... |

Since I don't know who it is, I have to at least 'match' your shots. These I took at the Monaco GP, same year.

Why yes, it is! Francois Hesnault. Now, as our lucky winner, please tell us how/why you knew that! |

Here's a guy that I'm willing to bet nobody has ever heard of. To give you a sporting chance, it's Detroit, and the year is 1984. Second one, of course, is Senna in his rookie season.

Katching! Driver school in the West and Co commentator on Speed. Also guest speaker at F1 events. "Flew over the kookoo's nest" in the Tarzan curve in Zandvoort and in St. Devote in Monaco. Scarry! |

No, not Scott Bakula. Don't know that name btw, was he ever in F1? C'mon guys, the mistery pilot is HUGE in the US, well within the world of racing/F1. |

Jack, now I got you in the corner: If you're Dutch you have NO excuse for not knowing him. He had two absolutely horrific crashes in his F1 career and one was in Zandvoort. ...that is unless my leaking memory just went on the Fritz |

Anthony, that's actually my friend, Jay. There's one of me somewhere...That year, Hilfiger actually threw a bunch of hats into the crowd--we missed getting one by mere minutes. They were pretty cool, too. I've got a few pit shirts. Love 'em too. Andreas, you are right. It's Giacomelli. |

>>>2nd uh I'm not even sure myself. It might be Hector Rebaque, but don't really know. It was a wild guess because of the "Bata" patches which is a Dutch shoe brand so I though he had to be Dutch hence Luyendijk. >>>Funny you didn't know the first uh. He is pretty famous in the US these days. From TV and other 'enterprises'. That's probably the reason... I'm Dutch... Hahahahaha! Jack |

I thought, that #4 looked like Alfa. Bruno Giacometti perhaps? It isn't the late Patrick Depailler by any chance? |

Jack, is that you in the last picture with Zanardi? I really liked the green Lotus of that era. The teamwear is really good aswell. I have a friend who managed to buy one of the Hilfiger Lotus team shirts 3 or 4 years ago. This started an obsession and he now deals in racing teamwear full time. His website is http://www.raceshirt.com/ The funny thing is that he knows nothing about the cars or drivers and doesn't watch the races. He just really likes the shirts! |

Andreas, Mario drove for Williams at Long Beach in '82. I believe it was a one-off--American driver, USGP--until the second seat was filled. I'll need help from the history buffs here, but I believe that Alan Jones quit, and they needed a fill-in until they signed Reutemann to partner Rosberg. Does that sound right? |

All are correct except for #4. 1982, Alfa Romeo. I took all of these myself, spanning from '82 until today. I've got zillions more... |

Great pics, but no legends?! Alright, I go for the bait: - Mario Andretti ??? (doesn't make sense in a Williams suit - Michael Andretti - Gerhard Berger - no idea - Johnny Herbert - Jacques Laffite - Niki Lauda - Nigel Mansell - Ricardo Patrese - Nelson Piquet - Didier Pironi - Alain Prost - Gilles Villeneuve - Zanardi ??? Did you take all these? I'm jealous. But then again I got some nice ones myself.

Found a bunch of photos I took over the years of different drivers, so I thought I'd post some. I think it's fun to look to look back...
